Read is no stranger to youth hockey camps. He usually spends a good part of his offseason attending them and telling aspiring players his own story of perseverance. It's quite a story.
Despite going undrafted after playing four seasons at Bemidji State University, Read has had a solid NHL career.
It started with the Philadelphia Flyers signing Read to a three-year, entry-level contract March 24, 2011, and took off later that year after Read made the Flyers out of training camp for the 2011-12 season. A 24-goal scorer his first season, Read was fourth in the balloting for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie, after becoming the 16th rookie in Flyers history to score at least 20 goals.
That total included six goals in a five-game span from Nov. 13-21, 2011, the longest scoring streak for a Flyers rookie since Mikael Renberg scored in six straight from March 24-April 2, 1994.
A solid two-way player, Read also scored two shorthanded goals as a rookie, and in 2013-14 he had a team-leading four to finish third in the NHL. In 2012-13 he received votes for the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship after he had two penalty minutes in 42 games.
On Jan. 26, 2013, Read got his first NHL hat trick, against the Florida Panthers.
