He played in the Western Hockey League in 2012-13 and led Kelowna defensemen with 42 assists and 52 points. In 2013-14, he scored 61 points (15 goals, 46 assists) and was plus-47 in 64 games.

The Brandon, Manitoba native led Devils defensemen in points (21) and assists (20) while averaging 18:10 of ice time per game in 2015-16. He scored 21 points (one goal, 20 assists) in 72 games.
The Devils signed Severson to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $4,166,700 on Sept. 11, 2017 after he scored 31 points (three goals, 28 assists) in 80 games.
In 2018-19, Severson set NHL career highs in goals (11) and points (39) and played in all 82 games. He had 31 points (eight goals, 23 assists) in 69 games when the 2019-20 season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
