Panthers team scope

Florida Panthers defenseman Keith Yandle will skate during the pregame warmup and then decide if he's able to play Tuesday. Yandle sustained a lower-body injury during the first period and did not return in a 4-3 overtime loss at the Boston Bruins on Monday. "He's a pretty tough kid," coach Tom Rowe said. "He's been taking treatment on it all day so we'll see." Yandle leads Panthers defensemen with 12 points and is second on the Panthers in average ice time per game with 21:47 behind defenseman Aaron Ekblad (23:21). Yandle has played 577 consecutive games, 10th-longest in NHL history and second among active players to Andrew Cogliano of the Anaheim Ducks (730). "He's a good puck-moving guy, he's tough," Rowe said. "He helps our power play even though our power play isn't clicking right now. He's definitely a guy who can get it going." Rowe said using seven defensemen is an option if Yandle is able to play. "Never done it before but it doesn't mean I wouldn't do it," Rowe said. "Maybe in the American [Hockey] League did it a couple times. We'll see how Keith is in warm-up and go from there."

Flyers team scope

The Philadelphia Flyers have won five straight games but they feel their stretch of good play dates beyond that. "I think we have to look back to the past nine games," captain Claude Giroux said. "We started playing very well nine games ago, playing the way we wanted to consistently." Coach Dave Hakstol traced the turnaround to a 3-2 win against the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 12, one day after they had lost 6-3 at the Toronto Maple Leafs. "We laid an egg in Toronto about a dozen games ago," he said. "We came home after that game and played hard on a back-to-back a night after traveling. We ground out a good win against Minnesota. Overall the consistency has been good since that point in time." The players said they believe the key has been improved defensive play. Philadelphia has allowed 29.4 shots per game in their past 12, compared to 27.3 per game in the first 15 games of the season, but have allowed 2.25 goals per game, compared to 3.73 at the start of the season. "I think we're playing better defense, to be honest," forward Jakub Voracek said. "We're playing five-man units all over the ice and still scoring. It's good to see."

Status report

James Reimer will start in goal after Luongo made 32 saves against the Bruins on Monday. It will be Reimer's first game since Nov. 27. "He's played well," Rowe said. "He had one game that he struggled in [six goals allowed on 30 shots against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 17], that's about it. He's a battler in there. He and [goalie coach] Robbie Tallas have been working really well together. He's given us good minutes." Smith finished the game on the top line and will remain there to start Tuesday. "Reilly wasn't exactly going the way he wants to go and we thought maybe a change, get him with Barkov, give him a little different look on the left side," Rowe said. "Really liked the way he played in the third period. Gives us another weapon up there with some experience. … Malgin isn't ready to play those top minutes against other teams' best defensemen. So we figure having Smith there, he knows how to handle it, it'll be a good mix." If Yandle can't play, or if the Panthers use seven defensemen, McIlrath would play his second game since being acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers on Nov. 8. He's been a healthy scratch the past nine games. … Leier, 22, will make his season debut. He had been recalled from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Monday, and has 20 points in 22 AHL games. He didn't have a point in six games with the Flyers last season. "I think Taylor really has continued doing in the first couple of months in Lehigh Valley exactly what he did for us here in training camp," Hakstol said. "He has been playing a real sound, solid role as a two-way winger. He's scoring at a good pace, he's nearly a point a game there which is outstanding. He's also continued to do a very good job killing penalties." Mason will start for the fifth straight game and for the 13th time in the past 15. Gudas is healthy after missing the past two games because of an illness, but Hakstol said he needs some time to build his strength back.
