RALEIGH, N.C. - Departing for their annual State Fair road trip on Friday, there was both good and bad news for the Carolina Hurricanes before taking off.

Getting the unfortunate out of the way, forward Taylor Hall is unlikely to play on the five-game trip. Suffering an upper-body injury in Tuesday's win over the Washington Capitals, head coach Rod Brind'Amour called it "a week-to-week situation."

Keeping specifics close to his vest beyond that, this time next week the Canes will be in St. Louis with just one game remaining on their cross-continent journey, likely meaning that they'll have to make it back to Raleigh without him.

Already having lost Jordan Staal (calf tear) for "at least a month" earlier in the week, the team recalled young forwards Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

The two took part in the morning practice at Lane Arena before takeoff, with Nadeau notably working in Hall's spot next to Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake.

"Both those guys, I thought, played great in the preseason. We just didn't have spots available, Brind'Amour explained. "We've got injuries, so I'm sure they'll get some action here."

Each known for their offensive abilities, Nadeau possessing a top-tier shot and Unger Sorum a wicked playmaking ability, the 2023 draft picks also worked on the team's second power play unit.

PP2: Jankowski, Nadeau, Stankoven, and Unger Sorum with Miller

"If they do certain things, you have to give them opportunities; otherwise, what is the point?" Brind'Amour asked. "Both are skilled players, and trying to get them power-play time is likely what we need to do."

For the 21-year-old Nadeau, he has his eye on making a real impact with his runway.

Appearing in 12 regular-season games and registering his first three NHL goals last year, the early-career milestones and jitters are out of the way, and now it's about showing the abilities the organization has always believed he's had at the highest level.

"I just have to go out there and not try to think, just play. That's usually when you're at your best," Nadeau told reporters. "Just try to go out there and have fun, and usually, the success will come."

Scoring 32 and 27 in his first two AHL seasons, he joins a roster that ranks tied for second in the NHL with their 31 goals as a team already this season.

As for Unger Sorum, he said it feels like his first "real" call-up.

Making his NHL debut in April during the team's regular season finale on Long Island, the winger recorded his first point on his very first shift.

"It's a really good team, and you just want to help," he said. "You just have to take it day-by-day, go out there and do your best, and have fun."

Last season, Unger Sorum ranked tied for third among all AHL skaters with a whopping 49 assists as a 20-year-old.

With the biggest opportunity of their young NHL careers ahead of them, the two have a winger coming from behind them for a roster spot as well, in the form of the soon-to-be returning Seth Jarvis.

Making his way back from offseason shoulder surgery, the team's leading goal-scorer from last season (32) joined his teammates on the plane as they start their run on the road in his hometown of Winnipeg.

Not cleared to play just yet, Brind'Amour said he is "hopeful" that will change soon.

Jarvis has been a full participant in practice over the past few weeks, including graduating from his non-contact sweater earlier this month. The 2020 first-round pick said he'd like to get in a few more skates before making his season debut, as he works to embrace the physical nature of the game he knows he has coming his way.

Amid their travels and five games in eight days, Carolina currently has just one practice scheduled on the trip, coming on Wednesday in Edmonton.
