8.3.22 Cole 25th Anniversary

The Carolina Hurricanes owned both the 70th and 71st picks in the third round of the 1998 NHL Draft.
At #70 they selected defenseman Kevin Holdridge.
At #71 they selected forward Erik Cole.

When all was said and done for the draft class of '98, only six players had scored more goals in their career than Cole (265).
Breaking into the lineup in 2001, the scoring winger would go on to play nine seasons with the franchise.
In April of 2005 he became just the second player in NHL history to be awarded two penalty shots in the same game and in 2006 he represented the United States at the Olympic Games.
A member of the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning team, Cole suffered a serious neck injury late in the regular season when he was the victim of an illegal check from behind by Brooks Orpik of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Suffering two fractures in his vertebra, Cole miraculously returned for Games 6 and 7 of the Finals against the Edmonton Oilers, providing the team with an emotional lift en route to victory.
