PRE-GAME REPORT

RALEIGH, NC -Tonight is all about opportunity for the Oilers.
It's an opportunity to start another wining streak, an opportunity to leapfrog a few teams and get back to second place in the Pacific Division, and an opportunity for some players to grab a bigger role moving forward.
Edmonton was left with a gaping hole in their top-six when Evander Kane was cut by a skate last game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The sniper will miss the next 3-to-4 months while recovering, but according to Head Coach Jay Woodcroft, Kane is doing well after the scare.
"He's in good spirits, came through his procedure pretty well. Everybody seems to be in a good spot with where it's at," Woodcroft said. "The good news for Evander and our team is that he's meeting us down in Florida. He's in a good spot stabilizing, he's going to be around his teammates and then eventually he'll fly home with us when we go back to Edmonton."
"He's in a good space physically and a good space mentally," he added. "Now it's just about making sure he takes the time to convalesce properly and get up to speed and let kind of time take its course."
The loss of a player who can be counted on for 20, 30, 40 goals on a given year is impossible to replace on a whim. However, Woodcroft continues to look at things through a positive lens. Kane's absence opens up some opportunity for others on the team to step up and seize some additional ice time with the club.
"I look at it is a great opportunity. Next man up. And I think all hockey players crave for a little bit more ice time, a little bit more responsibility. They want to be elevated in a line up," Woodcroft said. "Well, now is the time that we're going to have people step up and try and take some of Kaner's ice time that is open now that now he's not in the lineup. I think it's a great opportunity for us and allows us to evaluate where people are at, and we're excited about trying some people in some new spots."
One of the biggest opportunities available is a chance to ride shotgun with either Leon Draisaitl or Connor McDavid. First up, it looks as if Dylan Holloway will be given a chance after a successful run in the preseason in that spot.
"I think for Dylan, he's had the opportunity to play the first ten games of his career and learn some lessons along the way, learn how good this league is night in and night out," Woodcroft said. "We've kind of moved him around the lineup. There are nights where he's played a lot and nights where he didn't play a lot, but for me, I think he'll be excited. He has some chemistry with Hymen and Draisaitl going back to their training camp and I think he's excited about the opportunity."

Holloway currently has two assists in his first 10 NHL games moving between left wing and centre ice. He missed a handful of contests after he was injured on a hit by Ilya Lyubushkin the Oilers game against the Buffalo Sabres last month, but tonight's game against the Hurricanes represents the perfect opportunity to get on a roll in his rookie season.
Between the pipes, Jack Campbell will be given an opportunity to build off his best start as an Oiler, turning aside 35 of 37 shots in the team's win against the Lightning. The 30-year-old has been solid against the Hurricanes in his career, sporting a 2.13 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage against the Eastern conference foe.

JANMARK, SET, GO!

Another forward who will be given an opportunity to seize a role on the Oilers is Mattias Janmark. The forward, along with recent trade acquisition Klim Kostin, was recalled from the Bakersfield Condors after the injury to Kane.
Janmark is slated to make his Oiler debut tonight, while Kostin gets acclimatized to his new teammates.
"It's going to be fun," Janmark said. "Took some time so obviously I'm excited about it, but the chance and hopefully I can do good and hopefully the team can and get a win."
Janmark joined the Oilers in the offseason, but was a victim of the team's tight cap situation in training camp. After some work permit issues were resolved, he had acquitted himself nicely with the Oilers AHL affiliate with two goal and two assists in four games. It was a situation which the long-time NHLer wasn't happy about, but he channeled a positive frame of mind to make sure he was prepared for the eventual opportunity.
"I didn't like the situation, obviously I was not happy with it, but I don't think anyone would and we all want to play in the NHL, so it took probably a week to kind of refocus," Janmark said. I was actually stuck in Edmonton for about two and a half, three weeks to get a visa to go, so that was probably good. I got to wrap my head around it and then once I got down there, I felt like I really had to play hard and do well because there is kind of a ripple effect too. When I get sent down there, another guy gets sent down to the ECHL, so I didn't want to go down there and just take up a spot. There's a great group of guys down there."

PRE-RAW | Mattias Janmark 11.10.22

Janmark, who had 25 points (9G, 14A) in 67 games last season, used the additional ice time afforded to him in Bakersfield to hone his game ahead of a likely callup.
"I had a good time and hopefully I can take that with me here, Janmark said. "When you're playing down there, you get a few more touches with the puck, you get a few more minutes, so hopefully I can carry that over to the Oilers."
Janmark was skating with Devin Shore and Kostin this morning at pre-game skate, and is likely to play tonight in Carolina even if Woodcroft decides to go with his 11 forwards, seven defencemen setup. The Oilers coach feels comfortable with what the Swede can contribute to an Oilers team looking to get into a rhythm.
"I know Matthias and just from training camp, and obviously he has NHL experience," Woodcroft said. "He's a good penalty killer. He's a heavy body. I think he can add to our lineup."
His fellow Bakersfield callup in Kostin will most likely have to wait for his Oilers debut. The big-bodied forward was a former first-round pick back in 2017 and has posted 11 points in 46 NHL games. The 23-year-old was off to a decent start with the Condors with four points in nine games, but he should bring an additional physical element top the Oilers bottom-six in due time.
"For Klim, it's my first time that I got to see the whites of his eyes tonight. It's nice to meet him," Woodcroft said. "I think he's buoyed by the fact that another organization identified him. We traded for him at the start of camp or at the end of camp start of our regular season. He went down, was a great soldier down in Bakersfield, really contributed to the group down there and he's waiting for his opportunity in hopes of making an impact. He's a big body and he's got some skill. He's a first-round draft pick for a reason."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. HURRICANES
STREAM: 5:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet West
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers head to Carolina for a Thursday night matchup against the Hurricanes, looking to build off the successes of Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The game was a story of redemption for pieces of the Oilers game. The penalty kill, which entered the night as the league's 30th ranked unit, went a perfect 5-for-5 against the high-powered Tampa team -- also scoring a shorthanded goal off the stick of Warren Foegele.
Edmonton played a much more complete game from the net outward and were rewarded with Jack Campbell's bet performance in an Oilers sweater. The goaltender turned aside 35 of 37 shots on the night, including several key stops late with the Lightning net empty to seal the win.
The Oilers powerplay continued to roll, adding another two goals off the sticks of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl to push their NHL's second-best man advantage to 32.7 per cent on the season.
Edmonton has already clashed once with their Thursday night opponent this season, with the Oilers picking up the 6-4 victory at Rogers Place back on October 20. McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lead the offensive output with a goal and three assists each, while Campbell stopped 36 of 40 shots directed his way in the win.
Oilers forward Evander Kane also notched a goal in the victory, however he will not be dressed for the rematch following a frightening injury suffered on Tuesday against the Lightning. The 30-year-old was placed on LTIR on Wednesday and is expected to miss the next 3-4 months. Veteran forward Mattias Janmark and the recently acquired Klim Kostin were subsequently recalled from Bakersfield.
Hurricanes Team Scope
The Hurricanes will be looking to replicate the same feat the Oilers did on Tuesday night, by winning the second game of a back-to-back. Carolina took on the Panthers at FLA Live Arena on Wednesday, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Florida.
The Panthers saw goals by Nick Cousins, Aleksander Barkov, and and a late empty netter by Same Bennett -- while goaltender Spencer Knight was outstanding, stopping all 40 shots he faced to blank the Hurricanes. In the other crease, Antti Raanta had a strong game in the defeat, only allowing two goals on 35 Florida shots.
When the Oilers and Hurricanes got together back in October, it was Andrei Svechnikov who did the heavy lifting for the Raleigh squad's offence. The Russian sniper was dialed in on the evening, recording the hat trick for his fourth, fifth, and sixth goals of the season. The former second-overall pick back in 2018 currently leads the Canes with eight goals on the season.
The 8-4-1 Hurricanes have also been buoyed by the emergence of Martin Necas. The 23-year-old has exploded out of the gates with 17 points in his first 13 games after a solid 40-point effort (14G, 26A) last season.
