BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NORTH CAROLINA TOOLS TO VICTORY
9:25 p.m.
Here are the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina three Tools to Victory for tonight's game in Anaheim.
1. Start Strong
The starts haven't been an issue for the Hurricanes on this road trip. Ensure that's the same tonight.
2. Maintain and Push
After a strong start that hopefully leads to an early lead, the Canes need to find a way to both maintain the lead and grow it. Playing from behind on the road makes things harder than they need to be.
3. Two Points
The Hurricanes are still searching for their first win of this road trip. They need to get it tonight before heading to Vegas for a match-up with the Golden Knights on Tuesday.
CALIFORNIA TREK ENDS IN ANAHEIM
12:00 a.m.
The Carolina Hurricanes' three-game trek through the state of California ends in Anaheim against the Ducks on Monday night.
The Hurricanes, who have dropped two straight overtime decisions, are still looking for their first win of this six-game road trip.
"We need to get a win, and we need to get a win in regulation," head coach Bill Peters said on Sunday afternoon.
Down two goals to the top team in the Western Conference on Saturday night, the Canes fought back with two goals in the final 10 minutes to earn a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings.
Victor Rask scored on the team's third power play of the game to get the Canes on the board, and then with just over two minutes left in regulation, Elias Lindholm netted a rebound goal to even the score and force overtime. Tanner Pearson scored the game-winning goal with just 19.2 seconds left in 3-on-3.
"There were so many good things in that game last night. I loved the fact that we stayed with it. I thought we had some good looks early, and Quick made some big saves," Peters said after a Sunday practice in Anaheim. "Real good push in the third. Give those guys credit. … There are a lot of things we can build on and move forward with."
One of those things is the play of the special teams that was a combined minus-4 in a 5-4 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks and rebounded with a power-play goal against the league's best penalty killing unit, a 6-on-5 goal and a spotless penalty kill that held the Kings without a shot on their one man advantage of the night.
"There have been some changes made to units and whatnot, but we had a real good day again today. We spent a lot of time on the power play and then some specific time at the end of practice with the 12 penalty killers we intend to use for the rest of this trip," Peters said. "I expect real good results here tomorrow and moving forward."
In their fourth of six straight games on the road, the Hurricanes draw a Ducks team that has posted a 1-1-3 record to begin the month of December. Most recently, Anaheim lost 3-2 in overtime to the Minnesota Wild on Friday. Monday's game marks the Ducks' last game at home before they head out for six straight of their own on the road.
There's no word on goaltending just yet for the Hurricanes, who will likely use both Scott Darling and Cam Ward with a back-to-back set that sees the team make its first-ever stop in Vegas on Tuesday.
"We've talked about trying to use our depth for sure," Peters said. "We need to get a win tomorrow, so our focus now is to get a win tomorrow and then we'll figure it out from there."
CANESPR NOTES: The Hurricanes have only been shut out by the Ducks once in franchise history (Feb. 23, 2003). … The Canes have scored a power-play goal in three of their last four games against the Ducks. Also, Carolina has not allowed a power-play goal in six straight games against Anaheim, going 12-for-12 on the kill in that time.
