Kings at Sharks | Recap

SAN JOSE -- Igor Chernyshov scored his second goal of the game at 3:18 of overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 5-4 win against the Los Angeles Kings at SAP Center on Saturday.

Macklin Celebrini pushed the puck up the middle of the ice and slid a pass to the left face-off circle, where Chernyshov's one-timer beat Los Angeles goalie Anton Forsberg by the glove.

"(I saw the) net and just tried to score," Chernyshov said. “(Celebrini) did a lot. I mean, I think all our team did a lot in this game, and like that's why we won."

Chernyshov also had an assist, Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist, and Celebrini had two assists for the Sharks, who started their season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2021-22. Kiefer Sherwood and Nolan Allan also scored, and Yaroslav Askarov made 31 saves.

"We won the game, that's good, but we gotta get going here," Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. "We can put the puck in the net, but we're trying to win a lot of hockey games and go do something in the spring. And you have to play a certain way, or you won't. We can't just rely on skill."

Adrian Kempe, Artemi Panarin, and Quinton Byfield each had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who are 0-1-1 after losing their season opener to the Colorado Avalanche 8-4 on Wednesday. Brandt Clarke had two assists, and Forsberg made 20 saves in his season debut.

"I mean, it's tough. The score didn't go our way. I thought there was a ton of fight in the end," Kings coach Peter Laviolette said. "I really liked the way we played the overtime but hate the result."

Kempe put the Kings up 1-0 with a power-play goal at 15:50 of the first period. Panarin fed a seam pass from the left face-off circle to Kempe at the right face-off circle, and his one-timer beat Askarov by the blocker.

"We had some really good looks early. It is nice to get on the board, nice for the whole line to get on the board," Kempe said. "I thought we were really good all night long."

Toffoli tied it at 1-1 with a power-play goal 1:48 into the second period. Ivar Stenberg walked down the left wing and found Toffoli at the right post for the open tap-in. It was the first NHL point for Stenberg, the No. 2 pick of the 2026 NHL Draft.

"He's a great player,” Toffoli said. “He does everything on the ice. I think there's a reason why he's playing with (Alexander Wennberg) and playing against other teams' top lines.”

Sherwood gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead at 9:52, stealing a cross-ice pass and ripping a wrist shot from high in the slot.

Allan pushed the lead to 3-1 at 12:32. Michael Misa turned to the boards on the left wing and found Allan at the left point, and his wrist shot beat Forsberg through the five-hole.

Byfield cut the lead to 3-2 with a power-play goal at 19:58. Mats Zuccarello fed Byfield a pass from the right corner, and Byfield roofed a wrist shot over Askarov’s shoulder from the right circle.

"Our power play wasn't great in the first game, so scoring two this game really boosts it, and then a late goal going into intermission helps," Byfield said.

Chernyshov gave the Sharks a 4-2 lead at 4:08 of the third period. Toffoli sent Chernyshov into the Kings zone with a stretch pass from the defensive zone to the blue line, and his backhand shot from the slot beat Forsberg by the blocker.

Erik Haula cut the lead to 4-3 at 10:21. Erik Gustafsson's wrist shot from the left point deflected off Haula's body as he was crossing the front of the net and beat Askarov by the blocker.

Panarin tied the game 4-4 at 15:00 of the third period. Byfield skated into a San Jose giveaway at the blue line and found Panarin at the left face-off circle for a one-timer.
