A first-round pick by the Blue Jackets (No. 14) at the 2013 NHL Draft, Wennberg scored 21 points (16 goals, five assists) for Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League in 2013-14 and was a Rookie of the Year finalist.
He arrived in North America the following season and played 68 games for the Blue Jackets, scoring 20 points (four goals, 16 assists). Wennberg scored his first NHL goal against the Nashville Predators on Dec. 22, 2014.

After setting NHL career highs in assists (46) and points (59) in 2016-17, Wennberg signed a six-year contract with the Blue Jackets on Sept. 1, 2017.
The Blue Jackets bought out the final three seasons of Wennberg's contract and he signed one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Oct. 9, 2020, scoring 17 goals in 56 games in 2020-21.
An unrestricted free agent, Wennberg signed a three-year contract with the expansion Seattle Kraken on July 28, 2021.
On the international stage, Wennberg helped Sweden finish second at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2013 and 2014.
