No matter your age or skills stage, you can be involved in Sharks hockey!

Our programs are designed to enable hockey players and skaters to develop their individual skills in a fun and rewarding environment. On-ice instruction focuses on teaching participants the proper techniques of the fundamentals of skating, figure skating and, of course, hockey.

In addition to individual skill development, participants are introduced to basic rules, team play and the importance of teamwork, enabling them to be successful in their progression onto the subsequent levels of skating and play.

Sharks Play On

For many, the jump from a Learn to Play program to in-house hockey can be a big one and that's where the Sharks Play On program comes in!

Sharks Play On bridges that gap and gives Little Sharks and Learn to Play participants the chance to continue working on their skills while getting more comfortable in game-like settings.

Program Goals

Youth hockey data and statistics have shown that children who begin their hockey training within this format have an outstanding chance to succeed.

Data also shows that, upon completion of Little Sharks and/or Learn to Play program, many children need additional ice time, skills practice and/or instruction before moving on to a team or league environment. The Sharks Play On series is designed to provide just that!

Program Components

Skating is the skill that makes hockey unique and it is something that players of all levels of the sport continually strive to improve. Without adequate skating ability, players are less able to perform the other skills of the sport.

Stickhandling is perhaps the most difficult of the basic skills to master. It allows a player to maneuver around opponents and create better offensive opportunities.

Passing is what makes hockey a true team sport. Helping teammates experience success is what the game is all about and passing allows the thrill of scoring to be shared.

Shooting is the end result of offensive team play. Many players spend most of their time practicing shooting because they believe scoring is the most fun. Players should, however, place an equal emphasis on the other basic skills of hockey, as they are all important in developing the complete player.

Program Philosophy

The San Jose Sharks are in line with USA Hockey's ADM model and are proud believers in the Sharks Play On/Bridge Series curriculum. We also believe that:

HOCKEY IS MORE THAN A GAME. It develops skills on the ice that build a foundation for a lifetime. Hockey promotes confidence, pride, focus, and responsibility. With an emphasis on fun, hockey is a game to be played and enjoyed for life.

HOCKEY CREATES LIFE-LONG FRIENDSHIPS. Starting with the bonds created in the locker room to the relationships formed on the ice, hockey creates lifelong friendships. This camaraderie shared on and off the ice encourages teamwork and the natural development of leadership skills.

HOCKEY SETS PLAYERS UP FOR SUCCESS. From learning to balance responsibilities at home, school, and the rink - hockey encourages kids to learn time management skills. Hockey's unique source of physical fitness also promotes a healthy lifestyle.
