EDMONTON, AB - Philip Broberg's third and final World Junior Championship came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday as Sweden fell 3-2 to Finland in the quarter-finals.
Goals by Lucas Raymond and Elmer Soderblom gave Sweden a 2-0 lead after the first period, but Finland battled back to claim victory with a goal in the middle frame and two more in the third period, including the game-winner from Roni Hirvonen with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation.
Broberg finished the tournament with three assists, all recorded during the second period of Sweden's opening victory over Czech Republic. He missed Monday's win over Austria and played through some noticeable pain in Tre Kronor's final three games. Despite the physical impediments, he managed to play more than 20 minutes in each of those matchups.
Broberg will not be attending Oilers training camp, which opens on Sunday, and will travel home to continue his 2020-21 season with Skelleftea of the Swedish Hockey League. The eighth-overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft had two goals and six assists in 23 games prior to World Juniors.
