THREE THINGS: Ryan Strome

The Oilers made their first move here at the NHL Draft in Chicago, trading Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders, in exchange for forward Ryan Strome.
Here are three things to know about the newest Oiler and the trade that brought him to Edmonton.

1. OFFENSIVE UPSIDE

Ever since he was a young player growing up in the Toronto area, Strome was known for his offensive skill. The forward scored 85 goals and had 164 points in 74 games in the Greater Toronto Hockey League during the 2008-09 season.
Strome finished third in OHL scoring during the 2010-11 season with 106 points. Quickness and good stick-handling skills defined his scouting reports coming into the draft, where he was selected fifth-overall by the Islanders in 2011.

Strome has flashed some offensive talent at the professional level, scoring 49 points in 37 AHL games as a sophomore in 2013-14. He was leading the AHL in scoring when he was recalled by the Islanders.
Strome's offense is still translating to the NHL, but the 23-year-old forward did have a 50-point, 17-goal season in 2014-15. He is coming off 69-game 2016-17, in which he scored 30 points (13-17-30).

2. TALENTED TRIO

Strome has a pair of talented hockey brothers in Dylan and Matthew Strome. Dylan was selected third overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes and is coming off a stellar OHL career with the Erie Otters.
Dylan took over as captain of the Otters in 2015-16, after Oilers Captain Connor McDavid made the jump to the NHL with the Oilers.
Dylan and McDavid are good friends.
Matthew Strome is NHL Central Scouting's 33rd-ranked North American skater in the upcoming 2017 NHL Draft.
Strome's scouting report says he has a natural scorer's touch and offensive game, following in his brothers' footsteps.

3. ROSTER FLEXIBILITY

Strome is listed as a centre and a winger, although he mostly played right wing in New York. He took more than 300 faceoffs last season with the Islanders.

Strome's versatility up front and cap-friendly contract help the Oilers when it comes to roster building moving forward.
