EDMONTON, AB -The Oilers announced today Steve Staios has been added as a special advisor to the club's hockey operations staff with a focus on player development. Working closely with Oilers prospects, he will report to President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Ken Holland.
Staios, 49, a former Oilers blueliner for parts of eight seasons, departs as President and General Manager of the Ontario Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs, a role he held since the 2016-17 season.
The Hamilton native also served in various player development roles with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2012 to 2015 before moving to the Bulldogs, who won the 2022 OHL championship.
A 16-year NHL rearguard who saw action in 1,001 games, Staios patrolled the Edmonton blueline for 573 games from 2001 to 2009. Drafted by the St. Louis Blues, he began his playing career in Boston and eventually spent time with the Atlanta Thrashers, Vancouver Canucks, Oilers, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders.
On the international stage, he served as Director of Player Development with Team Canada at the 2014 World Championship and won gold medals at the 2003 and 2004 World Championships as a player, as well as a silver medal in 2008.
