PRE-GAME REPORT

NEWARK, NJ - There's beating the streak, then there's also getting one back on a team that Edmonton Oilers let one slip away against.
The Blue & Orange aren't short of motivation heading into Monday's meeting at the Prudential Center with the New Jersey Devils, who have the chance to match a franchise-record 13-game win streak if they can find a way to claim the two points against the Oilers just like how they found a way to steal two of them in Edmonton earlier this month on Nov. 3 at Rogers Place.
"It's exciting. We're looking forward to it," defenceman Cody Ceci said. "Obviously, they're riding high and playing great hockey. We had a good chance to knock them off in Edmonton and obviously let that one get away."
"We get a chance for redemption tonight."
The Devils have taken immense strides early this season to win 12 straight games and give themselves some breathing room in the Atlantic Division with a 15-3-0 record. That's thanks to a lot of growth from their offensive leaders Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, along with stalwart defending from the likes of Dougie Hamilton and solid goaltending from Vitek Vanecek in the absence of MacKenzie Blackwood.
"You don't win twelve in a row by accident. They're doing a lot of really good things," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I think if you look at the numbers that they're putting up, and not just the traditional ones but some of the ones if you dive a little bit deeper, they're doing lots of good things."
"They're a good team, but so are we."

The Oilers shut down another strong opponent that'd been making headlines with their NHL-leading offence and road results in the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night, earning a 4-3 victory on the back of Connor McDavid's overtime goal that pushed Edmonton's record to 10-8-0.
Defensively, the Oilers gave themselves a chance by limiting Grade-A opportunities for the Golden Knights -- something that's been a major component of their victories this season and will be crucial once again tonight against a team that's carrying immense confidence.
"I thought we put a sound defensive game and gave ourselves a chance," McDavid said. "That's all we wanted to do and that's what we're trying to do here tonight."
"I think we just got to take care of the puck, and then second, we've got to manage their speed," Ceci added. "They have a lot of fast guys that like to transition and get going right away, so I think the more we can be above them and take care of the puck, I think that will help us out tonight."
RE-ASSESSING FOR REDEMPTION
Both the Oilers and Devils were riding extended win streaks heading into their first meeting back on Nov. 3 in Edmonton, and New Jersey left with theirs still intact.
"I think the important thing to remember about that New Jersey game was that it was two teams riding high going into that game," Woodcroft said. "I think we had won five games in a row before that."
The Devils are still on the same win streak that now sits one away from a franchise record, while the defeat and the manner in which the Oilers conceded the two points are still on the minds of their players and coaches.
"Yeah, definitely it'll be a big challenge for us. They're playing well right now," Ceci said. "We let one slip away last time we played them, so we're definitely still thinking about that. I think they're still on the same winning street from that game, so we're looking to try and put an end to it."

New Jersey rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three goals in the third period, including two quick strikes in eight seconds that ultimately ended up ending Edmonton's night in a sour defeat on home ice.
"In the end, our details in that third period weren't good enough and we're going to be challenged by a really good team that's playing at the top of their game," Woodcroft said. "It's our obligation to meet them there."
"It sounds really cliché, but you've got to play the whole game, right?" McDavid added. "I thought we did a lot of good things for the first 40 minutes and we kind of let it slip away."
The Oilers have gone 3-4-0 since the defeat playing an 'uneven' game as described by Woodcroft despite earning some solid wins over Florida, Tampa Bay and the Vegas Golden Knights and navigating some long travel and tough circumstances -- Evander Kane's wrist injury against the Lightning being the top of that list.
Every loss is a lesson, and the Oilers are preparing themselves to rectify their loss to New Jersey earlier in the month by stifling their speed and staying strong on defence so they can stop their streak at 12 games.

PRE-RAW | Connor McDavid 11.21.22

"You've got to play a sound game. You've got to be good with the puck. You've got to manage the puck and you can't feed their transition and make them come the full 200 feet and all that stuff," McDavid said.
"We need to keep their guys in check. We got some good players on our side too who can make it hurt when you get a chance."
JESSE'S GAME
It hasn't been a perfect start to the campaign for forward Jesse Puljujarvi, but he's finding his footing with more physicality on a line with Klim Kostin and Ryan McLeod.
"I think if you would ask Jesse if the first 18 games went according to his script, probably not," Woodcroft said. "He's played a good chunk of time on Connor's line. His numbers, offensive numbers, might not be where he wants them to be, but I think he's found some life with this line with McLeod and Kostin."
The Finnish forward only has a goal and two assists to his name in 18 games this season, but he's one of Edmonton's best at creating chaos for the opposition by using his large 6-foot-4 frame and long reach to impose himself physically and break up pucks on the forecheck -- a contribution he hopes to keep providing even when the offence returns.

"Yeah, right now I'm trying to really be a little more physical too and trying to be a hard guy, tough guy," Puljujarvi said. "I think I really try to work hard every shift and make those turnovers, try to be hard in the blue paint and that basic stuff. Try to play smart and make plays."
It's a valuable skillset to have on a third line with Kostin and McLeod that's proven to be a punishing trio that can also create some offence from its tenacity and speed, especially for a line made up of a couple of bigger bodies.
"Yeah, (Kostin's) a pretty big guy too," he added. "Maybe a little bit bigger than me. I think we have a good line there and try to be hard to play against and, of course, try to make some plays and maybe score too… I really like (McLeod's) speed and tried to give him back a lot."

Oilers Team Scope
The Edmonton Oilers look to carry over their momentum from a 4-3 overtime victory against the Pacific Division leading Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday into a match with the NHL's most in-form side in the New Jersey Devils on Monday.
"I thought we started the way we wanted to start," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "It didn't go perfectly, it wasn't always pretty nice out there, but we found a way to win against a really good team. You talk about a building block and yeah, it's a real building block."
The Oilers didn't necessarily have their A-game over the full 60 minutes, including Connor McDavid battling equipment and puck magaement issues, but all it took was one moment in overtime for the captain to create a piece of magic and earn the Oilers the extra point at home.
The players and coaches of the Oilers have worked to improve their consistency over the first 18 games of their season and hope to utilize the result to improve their 10-8-0 record and launch themselves in the right direction heading into a three-game road trip where they'll stay in New York to play the Devils, Islanders and Rangers.
"It's consistency. We've kind of been up and down riding the rollercoaster and that's something that you just can't do on a nightly basis in this league," McDavid said. "You've got to find ways to have it every night, even when you don't win with your B- and C-game. It's obviously a big trip for us in New York playing a couple of teams that are red hot, and it's a good chance for us to build some momentum on this trip."

Devils Team Scope
Not much can be said about the New Jersey Devils other than the fact that they've been the class of the NHL for over a month now.
The Devils are riding high with an incredible 12-game win streak after downing the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on Saturday to push themselves to 15-3-0 and further into the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
"When you get on a run like this, a lot of good things that can happen," Devils Head Coach Lindy Ruff said. "I thought tonight was a total team game. We got the production, we got a key shorthanded goal from Sharangovich, but all four lines were in on it. I thought our defense played well, and our goaltender made some big saves at key times."
Erik Haula, Nathan Bastian, Jesper Boqvist, Sharangovich and Michael McLeod scored for the Devils, who are now one win away from tying their franchise record of 13 set during the 2000-01 season with the opportunity to match it against Edmonton on Monday night.
Centre Jack Hughes is the cream of the crop for the Devils in a forward group that's beginning to show signs of a true breakout, including Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier and up-and-comers like Fabian Zetterlund. Bratt leads the Devils in scoring with 21 points (7G, 15), followed by Hughes (7G, 12A) and Hischier (9G, 10A) with 19 points apiece.
New Jersey looks renewed under Ruff's watch behind the bench, employing a fast and effective 200-foot game while receiving sharp goaltending from Vitek Vanecek -- an off-season signing who's taken the bulk of the workload with MacKenzie Blackwood on the shelf due to injury.
