MORNING SKATE REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - It's just one of those days you look forward to every September.
The temperature in Oil Country is starting to drop a bit lower, and hockey is well and truly in the air.
We're into Day 4 of Oilers Rookie Camp, but we're just hours away from the unofficial start to the 2021-22 season. The Oilers Rookies prepare for their first taste of game action on Saturday night at Rogers Place against the Flames Rookies in the first of two Battle of Alberta's in the next three days between the rival clubs' top young talent.
This is not a drill - I repeat - this is not a drill.
"We were talking about it this morning as we were preparing for our pre-game skate, and we were pinching ourselves that it was a game day," Bakersfield Condors Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said pre-game. "This truly is the beginning of the hockey season.
"For us to be able to get back into that rhythm, get back into that mode, and turn our brains on in the way they need to be activated when you play another team from another organization, I think we're all excited about it. It's not just the players, it's the coaching staff too."
Preparation from the first three days of practice here in Edmonton blends with a teeming sense of excitement within the minds of the Oilers rookies, who've waded through the uncertainty of the '20-21 season and a long summer to arrive ready to impress in a long-awaited return to playing against real opposition - let alone a provincial rival like Calgary.

PRE-RAW | Philip Broberg 09.18.21

"It's against Calgary, so it's a rival of course and it's going to be an intense game," defenceman Philip Broberg said. "We just have to prepare for the game.
"A lot of good players are here, and obviously on their team as well, so I'm just looking forward to playing a game again. It's been a long time."
The lead-up to tonight's puck drop has been action-packed for the Oilers rookies in the previous three days, but the group feels it's experienced significant progression from first introductions into a team ready to compete.
"It's been great," forward James Hamblin said. "The energy level of everyone has been awesome, and I think everyone's come prepared. Everyone's a little outgoing too, so we're getting along pretty well, and the pace has been great."
Above all, it's an Oilers Rookie crop keen to impress in its first opportunity to do so.
"I think we have a great group of guys here; driven guys," Broberg added. "It's our first game together, so we're just going to go out and play, have some fun, and see where the night takes us."
NORTH TO SOUTH
The concept of a 'north-to-south' game of hockey isn't limited to the fact that the lineups will consist of rookies from two teams on opposite ends of Highway 2.
When looking for the best way to pack as much teaching as he could into only two full practices before tonight's 5:00 p.m. puck drop, Woodcroft used the theme to guide his on-ice sessions with the Oilers rookies.
"We just thought that was a creative way to try and get the most out of that day of practice," he said. "So the first day, we wanted to go north, and north meant attacking teams' nets either with possession while crossing the offensive blueline or giving up possession and trying to get it back.
"Then, yesterday's practice was about working back towards our own end, so we called that going south… We just wanted to paint a picture as clearly as we could, and I think it resonated with the players."

PRE-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 09.18.21

It was a great re-introduction to the speed of a real game for the rookies, with the pace of practice serving as an effective trial run to tonight's tilt.
"We've worked a lot on going up and down the ice, which has helped to throw those game scenarios and that game pace at us," Hamblin said. "I think everyone should be ready for what's to come."
Simplicity, despite giving rookies a good understanding of the game plan, was the name of the game for Woodcroft.
"I think you want to walk the fine line of giving them a plan and not paralyzing them with too much information. So they have a basic plan," the Bakersfield coach said. "The thing is that we want to play a fast game, we want to play hard, and we can correct any small errors in those situations that night or the next day. So we want them coming with clear heads and making sure they're playing towards their strengths."
HAMBLIN' ON
Woodcroft wasn't a Hamblin' man until the Edmonton native played his cards right in Bakersfield last season.
There turned out to be no gamble; instead, it was more of a sure shot. The forward showed terrific versatility for the Condors and earned the coaching staff's trust by learning to contribute in all situations, ending the year with seven goals and 15 points in 38 AHL games.
"I think [trust] is a great word," Woodcroft said. "When I talk about James, I didn't know much about him until he showed up in Bakersfield and I got to watch him and how he conducted himself on a daily basis. I think maybe one of the more over-used terms in hockey nowadays, or more in-vogue terms in hockey, is the term 'Swiss Army Knife'. He's a player who can do everything."
Hamblin progressed from a fourth-liner in Bakersfield to a player who could slot into any forward position, play on the power play, or take on the task of completing an important penalty kill when called upon.

PRE-RAW | James Hamblin 09.18.21

"I thought it was a really good year," Hamblin said. "I thought I came in with a really good mindset just trying to become an everyday player, and I thought Woodie really let me take a role, especially later on in the year. He kept giving me more and more that I could do. I'm happy that he has that trust in me and hopefully, we can continue building on that."
The 22-year-old earns the opportunity tonight to play centre between offensive talents Xavier Bourgault and Raphael Lavoie.
"I just saw someone who kept getting better each and every day, and I think he's put in a good summer here," Woodcroft said. "I like the line that he's centering. He's got skill on both sides, and he's going to help those guys navigate the game today."
Hamblin hopes his utility will be put to good use between the two French Canadians.
"I think it's just about making the right play," he said. "If they're there, obviously I'll give it to them. I know they're going to be able to shoot. It's just another option for me. If I have the shot and I think I can take it, obviously I'm going to do that, but it just makes my life easier. I know they can put it away, so if they're there, I'm definitely giving it to them."
LINEUP NOTES
Goaltender Olivier Rodrigue is slated to play all 60 minutes tonight against hte Calgary Rookies while overseas arrival and 2019 third-round pick Ilya Konovalov works his way through a minor issue.
"I feel good and I feel ready. It's going to be a good game," Rodrigue said. "It's always a good game against Calgary, so I will enjoy the game tonight and give my best. Every day we want to get better. I have a chance to prove myself again, so I want to go on the ice and give my best."
Rodrigue has spent the last month in Edmonton preparing for Rookie Camp & Main Camp, and tonight is a chance for the Chicoutimi, Que. product to take control in the crease.

PRE-RAW | Olivier Rodrigue 09.18.21

"He's put a couple of days together here where he's feeling good about himself," Woodcroft said. "I just think Olivier coming in to start the game tonight allows us to see him in game action. He's put in a great summer of work."
The forward lines and defensive pairings have been assembled to best accentuate every prospect's toolkit, but it remains a consultation among the Oilers organization's many leaders in coaching, scouting, and management that will surely change over the coming two games.
"You try to gather as much information as you can from the resources within our hockey department, so [there were] lots of conversations," Woodcroft said. "I think I wouldn't read too much into lines or D pairings, or powerplay and penalty-kill units. It's the third day of the start of the season, so I think it's a starting point.
"We'll carefully evaluate not only after the game, but in-game as well if things need to get adjusted a little bit. We're not prisoners to what was decided beforehand; we're prepared to make adjustments."
