PRE-GAME REPORT
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Oilers wrap up their California road trip against a team that's been struggling but coach Ken Hitchcock was quick to point out at the team's pre-game media availability that doesn't mean that the team can take their opponents lightly by any stretch.
"I think anytime you play L.A. they've got a lot of the same qualities. They've been on the wrong side of a lot of one-goal games and you want to keep them on the wrong side," Hitchcock began. "There's a price that they make you pay if you want to win and if you're not willing to pay that price, then they push you out."
He went on to add that if the Oilers do play well tonight, they match up very well against the Kings.
"We have strengths that set up well to play this team, we've just got to get to them. When you do, like a team like Colorado did (defeating the Kings on Thursday 7-4) then you're going to be successful. If you don't get to your strengths and they're able to dictate and bog you down in certain areas, you're going to be in trouble.
"They play a very methodical game and we've got to take them out of that."
EXPECTED LINEUP; TALBOT TO START
The Oilers, based on practice Saturday, appear to be going with the following lineup:
Spooner - McDavid - Draisaitl
Caggiula - Nugent-Hopkins - Chiasson
Lucic - Brodziak - Kassian
Rattie - Khaira - Puljujarvi
Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Russell
Gravel - Wideman
Cam Talbot will get the start in goal as per Hitchcock's comments on Saturday.
"It's nice to get back in and finish this road trip up strong and get back to where I want to be," said Talbot, adding that he's liked how the team has looked under the new head coach.
"We've been looking really great the last couple of games. We've shut down a couple of pretty good offences and haven't given up much around our net lately. Hopefully we can come out tonight, play another solid defensive game and finish this road trip up strong."
Talbot added that he's noticed some differences with the way the team plays now.
"I try to pick up on little things here and there. Watching guys play solid defensively, everybody's coming back. All five guys in the picture all the time and we're really taking care of the middle of the ice now."
SPOONER TO THE TOP LINE
Ryan Spooner was moved to the top line alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl at practice on Saturday and that's how the game will start tonight. Hitchcock talked about his reasoning for making the switch, which included moving Drake Caggiula to the second line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Alex Chiasson.
"We need a good second line," he said. "We need a second wave coming at them. We can't build momentum, break momentum, build momentum, break it down. We've got to get more momentum throughout the game and we can't keep stalling out. We need another line that can be a productive line, put pressure on people and establish some momentum that we can keep it."
Hitchcock spoke with some of Spooner's former teammates with the Bruins, where he's enjoyed the most success in his career.
"We need him to play that game. He's a very effective player when he uses his speed to put pressure on people, with and without the puck. Probably even more without the puck. That's the game that we need. Sometimes guys come in and they think they got to produce. What he needs to do is coming in and put pressure on people to create space for the other two guys on the line."
Spooner was happy that Hitchcock showed him the confidence to put him with the team's two stars.
"It shows that he has some faith in me. The year as a whole for me has been a bit of a struggle to get some points. I'm trying to work hard and it's a good chance for me, for sure," Spooner began.
"I've got to play the game that I can play. There's a lot of speed on that line, too."

PREVIEW
OILERS (10-10-2) at KINGS (7-14-1)
TV: 8:30 p.m. MST; Televised on Sportsnet West
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the first of four meetings between the two teams this season. The clubs will meet again at Rogers Place in less than a week, on November 29.
Last season, each team won a pair of games, one at home and one on the road. Connor McDavid had three goals and four points in four games to lead the way for the Oilers while Anze Kopitar had a goal and five points. Dustin Brown had three goals to lead the Kings in that category against Edmonton.
Oilers team scope:
The Oilers won the opener on this three-game California trip in San Jose on Tuesday in overtime but dropped an OT decision on Friday in Anaheim. With this being the third and deciding game, it'll really give a true gauge on how the trip went for the club.
Edmonton is three points back of a playoff spot but hold two games in hand on the Anaheim Ducks, showing how key tonight's game is.
McDavid leads the Oilers with 13 goals and 32 points while Leon Draisaitl also has 13 goals but 26 points. McDavid is third in the NHL in scoring, three points back of Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon and six behind Mikko Rantanen, who also plays for the Avs. Draisaitl is 19th in League scoring but only two points back of eighth.
Kings team scope:
The Kings have had a rough go of it this season. They're 2-6-0 in their last eight games and sit dead last in the NHL with only 15 points this season. They're four points worse than any other team in the League and 10 points out of a playoff spot.
Ilya Kovalchuk, who rejoined the NHL after playing a handful of seasons in Russia, has 14 points (5G, 9A) to lead the Kings in scoring.
With Jonathan Quick and Jack Campbell both injured, rookie Calvin Petersen has been playing the majority of games in goal. He has a 2-3-0 record with a 2.81 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. With the Kings having played last night, Peter Budaj might get the start. He's only started one game this season and provided mop-up relief in two others. He was chased from that game having allowed four goals in 24 minutes after facing 19 shots against Toronto.
By the Numbers:
The Kings and Oilers are both 1-2-1 against the Pacific Division. ... L.A. is 0-12-0 when trailing after two periods this season and 1-9-1 when trailing after one. When the opponent scores first, the Kings are 1-12-1. The Oilers by contrast are 5-6-1. ... L.A.'s power play is ranked 30th in the NHL at 13.4%. Their penalty kill is 29th at 74.2%.
McDavid has five goals and 11 points in 12 career games against the Kings. Kopitar has 11 goals and 40 points in 47 career games versus the Oilers.
