PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The Oilers try to replicate their last performance against the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight in the opening game of a five-game home stand at Rogers Place.
A 30-save shutout for Mikko Koskinen and three-point nights for Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl back on March 2 highlighted a 4-0 road victory that went down as one of the club's most decisive performances of the 2018-19 NHL campaign.
"It was one of our best games," Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock said. "But I think it's typical of our team because we're able to occupy the offensive zone, and that's how we play defence.
"That's the new NHL - more time to spend in the offensive zone and the less time you're going to spend defending. That's success and that's what we did in that game. We had long shifts in the o-zone and protected the puck, and it ended in goals for us."
Defenceman Matt Benning, who's plus-5 with three goals and two assists in his last 10 games, said less was more in their last clash against Columbus as he and his teammates were able to stifle a Blue Jackets team that now arrives in Edmonton having been outscored 11-3 as part of a four-game losing streak (0-3-1).
"I think we were quite simple," Benning said. "They got quite a bit of power offensively and some balanced lines, so when they don't have the puck I think that's better for us. I think that we chip pucks in, we supported each other well, and if one guy got beat there'd be another right behind him. We worked as a five-man unit."
The Oilers get a look at Joonas Korpisalo tonight in goal for Columbus after returning from a three-game road trip that ended 1-2-0. Pressure builds on this upcoming home stand with the Blue and Orange seven points adrift of a playoff spot with nine games left on their schedule.
"We've had success in the last little while here, and it's because we played a certain way," forward Sam Gagner said. "That's what we need to get back to. We've had discussions in here about what it's going to take for us, and I think if we're a group playing with passion and intensity that's working hard for each other, we have more success than not.
"We've got to find that tonight, and it's an important test for us."
PRESSURE HEATS UP AT HOME
Two wins out of three on the Oilers previous road trip was the goal, but taking only two points out of a possible six now amps up pressure on home ice and this upcoming five-game home stand.
"It puts a lot of pressure on coming close to running the table," Hitchcock, referencing the final nine games of the schedule and the playoff race, said. "It allowed other people to get involved, it allowed other teams to win a couple games in a row, and we said we needed to win two or three and then do our damage at home starting tonight.
"This puts pressure on us to really perform in these home games at a high level, and probably come close to winning them all as a saving grace. For me, it's about getting ready for tonight."

PRE-GAME RAW | Sam Gagner 03.21.19

A disappointing 7-2 result against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday puts the focus on game one of this home stretch tonight for the Oilers, with the approach expected to follow the one-game-at-a-time mentality until the regular season concludes.
"I don't think you focus on the nine games - you focus on tonight," Gagner said. "We have to get back to playing the way we know we can. We got outplayed pretty much from start to finish in St. Louis and tonight has to be a rebound for us. We have to make sure we're playing with passion, energy, and playing in their end."
LINEUP NOTES
Jujhar Khaira will miss tonight's game and is described as day-to-day for Hitchcock ahead of being re-evaluated tomorrow.
"I would say day-to-day, but we'll evaluate him tomorrow again. He's definitely not ready to play today, and whether he can play in a few days we'll see. We'll know tomorrow," Hitchcock said.
That means Colby Cave will centre the third line with Gagner and Tobias Rieder, and Hitchcock is determined to instil in Cave the aggressive and effective mindset he had earlier in the season after coming to the Oilers.

PRE-GAME RAW | Ken Hitchcock 03.21.19

"We talked to him in the last few days about getting back to his identity that he brought forward when he first came," Hitchcock said. "If he does that, he wins faceoffs and is a real good penalty killer. But sometimes that's a mental thing and that doesn't happen overnight. He's shown the ability to do it, and he's got to find a way to do it consistently to be that third- or fourth-line player in the NHL."
Koskinen is slated for his sixth-straight start in goal for the Oilers tonight and is 22-18-4 with a 2.89 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 47 appearances this season.
Lines at Thursday's morning skate appeared as follows:

Rieder - Cave - Gagner
Gambardella - Brodziak - Currie

PREVIEW

OILERS (32-34-7) vs. BLUE JACKETS (40-29-4)
TV: 7:00 p.m. MDT; Televised across Sportsnet
Head-to-Head:
The Oilers and Blue Jackets met once this season back on March 2 in Columbus, ending in a 4-0 shutout win for the Oilers. McDavid had three assists, and Draisaitl scored once and added two helpers in one of Edmonton's most decisive wins of the season.
Oilers team scope:
A 1-2-0 road trip for the Oilers against the Arizona Coyotes, Vegas Golden Knights and St. Louis Blues put a dent in the Oilers playoff hopes with only nine games remaining in their schedule. The Oilers sit seven points back of Arizona, who hold on to the Western Conference's final wild card spot.
The Oilers put up a second-period fightback against the Blues with two quick goals, but couldn't find their feet as Koskinen was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots and Jaden Schwartz recorded a four-point night with a hat trick and an assist in a 7-2 defeat.
The final push for a spot in the playoffs for the Oilers includes six of their last nine games at Rogers Place, where they're 16-17-2 this season.
Blue Jackets team scope:
The Blue Jackets narrowly sit in the Eastern Conference's second wild card spot, only one point up on the trailing Montreal Canadiens.
The club's push for the postseason hasn't been helped by two-straight losses (0-1-1) and a power play that's gone 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) in their last nine games. In their last four road games, the Blue Jackets are winless (0-3-1).
Artemi Panarin has five assists in his last 10 games, but has failed to score for the Blue Jackets during that span as the forward looks to break his slump and help his team solidify their place in the playoff picture.
By the Numbers:
Sergei Bobrovsky has an NHL-high 109 wins and 18 shutouts since the start of 2016-17... During his career, the netminder has a 7-5-0 with a 3.02 GAA & .889 SV% in 12 career games (11 starts) against the Oilers...
Connor McDavid needs three points to match his career high of 108 set in 82 games last season... He went without a point in his last game against the Blues, snapping his 12-game point streak and 8-game multipoint streak...
Columbus is 3-1-0 in their last 4 road games versus the Oilers, outscoring them 14-12...
Injury Report:
OILERS -Jesse Puljujarvi (hip) is on IR.
BLUE JACKETS - Ryan Murray (upper body) is on IR; Nick Foligno (personal) is day-to-day; Markus Nutivaara (illness) is day-to-day.
