GAME STORY: Oilers 4, Jets 3

WINNIPEG, MB - Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal with less than one second remaining as the Oilers won a thriller against the Jets 4-3 on Sunday.
Edmonton also got goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Kyle Turris and Kailer Yamamoto as they improved to 3-4-0 on the season and 2-1-0 so far on their road trip.

FIRST BLOOD

After an Oilers icing call, the Jets capitalized on the faceoff back in the Edmonton zone as Mathieu Perrault ended up with the puck behind the and found Adam Lowry in front for the one-timer past Mikko Koskinen to give the home team a 1-0 lead at 10:41 of the first period.

PLAY OF THE GAME

Jesse Puljujarvi drew a penalty with 2:03 remaining in the third period and the score tied 3-3, giving the Oilers a power play with a chance to net the potential game-winner. Even though they couldn't quite convert on the man advantage, Connor McDavid put a perfect pass on Draisaitl's stick from behind the net and the reigning league MVP blasted a one-timer past Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit for the momentous buzzer-beater goal. At 59:59, Draisaitl's winner is the latest regulation go-ahead goal in Oilers franchise history.

SAVE OF THE GAME

The former Oilers netminder Brossoit made the save of the game midway through the opening frame as McDavid burst around a Jets defender and set up Puljujarvi streaking to the net, but the Winnipeg puck-stopper stuck out his pad and made the denial to keep the contest scoreless.

TURNING POINT

After the Jets scored two goals in 73 seconds from Nikolaj Ehlers and Blake Wheeler to take a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining, the Oilers were able to battle back and net the equalizer as McDavid found Yamamoto for a point-blank conversion at the 16:55 mark. Yamamoto's third of the season swung the momentum right back in the Oilers favour after they dominated the second period and much of the third before the two quick Jets goals.

TOP PERFORMER

McDavid recorded three assists in the thrilling victory, including setting up the game-tying goal by Yamamoto and game-winning goal by Draisaitl in the final 3:05 of regulation. The Oilers captain now has four goals and six assists on the season, tying him with Toronto's Mitch Marner and Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar for the NHL scoring lead with 10 points.

The Oilers have one game remaining on their four-game road trip as they'll stay in Winnipeg for a couple more days to tangle with the Jets again on Tuesday at 6pm MT.

PARTING WORDS

"It felt really good being on the first line with those great players," Puljujarvi said of his first game with McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins, as he logged 17:33 with one assist, six shots and two hits.
"We were playing like crap," Turris laughed, asked what was said during the first intermission as the Oilers came to life in the middle frame after a sluggish opening 20 minutes. "They jumped on us from the start and dominated the period. We were playing like crap and we knew we had to turn it around."

"I've been really, really pleased with him from the first day of camp," Head Coach Dave Tippett said of Puljujarvi. "He's come in and had a great attitude, enjoys the game. He wants to be a really good player and he's moving in that direction in a hurry."
"The sky is the limit," Draisaitl said of Puljujarvi's potential in his first year back with the team. "He's big, he's strong, he can skate, he can shoot, he makes plays. I can go on and on. We're pretty happy to have him back and he's been really good for us."
