"There had been a lot of discussion, between myself and Marc Bergevin over the last few weeks," Chiarelli told Principe. "We felt we needed some depth down the middle and we thought it would give our coach some flexibility, he likes to move his forwards around. So, we looked at a lot of different players and this is a player that you check a lot of the boxes with him. He's got experience, he's got playoff experience, he's a very smart player, smart without the puck and I'd seen a lot of him in Ottawa and a lot of him in Boston.
"I think he's a competitive player, I know he's undersized but he's strong on the puck. He's had a bit of a tough year this year but part of what makes these trades is you look to what motivates these players and we feel David is very motivated. I talked to him, he's very motivated."

Chiarelli said the team's depth on defence, including down in the American Hockey League, allowed some flexibility to make this move with Davidson.
With the NHL Trade Deadline taking place tomorrow, the Oilers now sit relatively comfortable.
"If we do nothing tomorrow, I'm perfectly fine with it," Chiarelli said.
