The Edmonton Oilers announced Wednesday the signing of centre Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $8.5 million.
Draisaitl registered 29 goals, 48 assists and 77 points in 82 games during the 2016-17 regular season. The Deutschland Dangler then went on to post six goals, 10 assists and 16 points in 13 post-season games, helping the Oilers advance to the second round of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"I'm really excited to be back for eight years," Draisaitl said over the phone.
"I never really thought about going anywhere else. We have something really special. We have a great group of guys. It's something I wanted to be a part of as long as possible."
More to come, including comments from Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli.
