EDMONTON, AB - With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' shorty against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, the Oilers sit tied for the League-lead in shorthanded goals this season with six, all the while trying to improve their 30th-ranked penalty kill.
Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan commented on the oddity following Sunday's Oilers practice.
"The offensive part of it is a nice reward," he said. "We've been able to pick some passes off lately and go the other way. The finish on it has been really strong. We seem to finish better on 2-on-1s than we do in regular 5-on-5 play."
McLellan also alluded to the benefits of threatening teams offensively while down a man.
"It can back the other team off, which should help us with the defending part," he said. "We still have lots of improvement needed in our special teams units but I believe it is getting better."
