TAMPA, FL -When Connor McDavid edged out the hometown leader, Brayden Point, to win Fastest Skater at the 2018 NHL All-Star Skills Competition, he didn't hear a loud cheer so he knew he got it.
"They were nice to me," he said. "When I crossed the line, I figured I would either get a big cheer, which meant I lost, or there was not going to be anything, which meant I won. Obviously, there was not much being said, which was a good thing for me. You would have liked to see him win, because he would have had a bigger ovation for sure."
McDavid finished with a time of 13.454, which beat Point's 13.579. He became the first player in NHL history to win the event two years in a row.
"It's fun. It's an event I look forward to, I like doing it," he said. "I just try to go out there and not get hurt, is the main thing. I haven't done anything for two days and was not looking to pull something or tweak something. But I was able to put up a decent time and I feel good after it."
Before the event, there were reports of players not wanting to do fastest skater against McDavid, and now we know why. He's just too fast.
