EDMONTON, AB - While they're unlikely to combine for 627 points over two 30-game seasons like they did in Germany's U-16 league, Dominik Kahun is looking forward to a reunion with Leon Draisaitl.
The Oilers signed Kahun to a one-year, $975k contract on Monday and he already has a good friend on the team in Draisaitl, as the two played three seasons of youth hockey together in Mannheim and have also joined forces many times on the German national team.
"I'm super excited to join the Oilers," Kahun said to Bob Stauffer on 630 CHED's Oilers Now. "We've had a lot of contact together, so when there was a chance I could come to Edmonton, we started talking a lot. He for sure helped me and I'm glad for that."
The 25-year-old will likely get a chance to play left wing with both Draisaitl and Connor McDavid during the 2020-21 season, and he's no stranger to having superstar linemates, skating regularly with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews during his rookie year in Chicago, followed by significant time with Evgeni Malkin last season in Pittsburgh before his trade to Buffalo.
Kahun, who grew up in the Czech Republic before moving to Germany, told Stauffer he grew up idolizing Jaromir Jagr before his attention shifted to future Penguins teammate Sidney Crosby. The 2018 Olympic silver medallist with Germany also noted he feels he's a stronger passer than shooter but is putting in a lot of work on the latter right now in Munich as he prepares for next season.
