CANES HOST McDAVID, OILERS
12:00 a.m.
As Spring arrives, 10 games - five at home and five on the road - remain for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2017-18 regular season.
Following a 4-3 win against the Islanders in Brooklyn on Sunday, the Hurricanes return home for a pair of games against Western Conference opponents, beginning with Tuesday's match-up against the Edmonton Oilers.
It was just the Canes' fourth game of the season when these two teams first met. In that game, Teuvo Teravainen scored two goals in the first period, Jordan Staal recorded four points (1g, 3a) and Cam Ward made 48 saves on 51 shots in his first start of the season, as the Canes recorded a 5-3 victory.
Fast forward to the third full week of March, and the season is in its final stretch. The Oilers come to town for their lone visit of the 82-game campaign, their third stop on a four-game road trip. Edmonton, a team well out of the playoff race in the Western Conference, defeated Florida 4-2 on Saturday before falling to the Lightning, 3-1, on Sunday.
Last week, the Hurricanes dropped three games in regulation for the first time this season, and they put an end to that skid on Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Islanders in the final game of their four-game season series.
"I think our group has mental toughness," head coach Bill Peters said. "We've had a few gut punches. You've got to pick yourself up off the canvas and keep going. That's what we did today."
The Hurricanes, who were without defenseman Noah Hanifin on Sunday, will again be without their All-Star blueliner. Hanifin was diagnosed with a concussion, as announced by the team on Monday, and will remain out indefinitely while in the protocol.
The Canes recalled Valentin Zykov from Charlotte on Monday as well. Zykov leads the American Hockey League in goals (32) and power-play goals (16) this season.
CANESPR NOTES: Lee Stempniak skated in his 900th career NHL game on Sunday. … The Canes are 4-1-1 in their last six games against the Oilers. … Teravainen and Sebastian Aho have each earned points in five straight games (each has 2g, 4a).
