FLA_Juneteenth_16x9

The Florida Panthers and BB&T Center would like to encourage fans throughout South Florida to learn about African American Culture in observation of Juneteenth. Named a United States federal holiday this week, Juneteenth -- a combination of "June" and "nineteenth" -- is an annual holiday observed around the United States that celebrates the end of slavery.
Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, news didn't reach Galveston, Texas until June 19, 1865.
Observation of this holiday can include taking time for reflection and education. We've included resources below from our local partners.
For our Broward County residents, the Broward County Libraries offers a variety of books, audiobook and video resources for all ages. These resources can be accessed with a Broward County Library Card! Visit the website
here
to browse.
The Panthers have partnered with RISE & EVERFI this year to launch
'Diversity Discussions'
, a free educational program in more than 200 Broward County and Miami-Dade high schools that equips teachers with the tools to foster enriching conversations surrounding these topics and breaks down cost barriers for educators. Ask if this program is available in your family's or children's classroom.
Through the partnership with RISE, we encourage fans to participate in their online resource, the
RISE Digital Learning Series
which covers eight topics, two courses and provides an interactive, web-based experience that anyone can go through at their own pace. RISE also has a
resources page
on their website that includes a glossary and digital modules to participate in. Access this at any time free of cost!
Enjoy any of these resources virtually or join us and the Florida Panthers Foundation for a Juneteenth community event in Ft. Lauderdale at Joseph C. Carter Park (1450 W. Sunrise Blvd.) on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 12 pm to 5 pm. Held to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, the event will highlight the legacy of African American culture while promoting racial equity in the Black community.
This family-friendly Juneteenth celebration, made possible with support from the Florida Panthers Foundation, will be attended by local community members, elected officials, and other stakeholders, and feature free educational resources and entertainment for all ages, including live music from local artists, food, games, and more. We hope to see you there!
