As the Florida Panthers celebrate their 25th Anniversary throughout the entire 2018-19 season, we here at FloridaPanthers.com thought it would be fun to also look back on the decade that welcomed the franchise with a new recurring feature called "Back in the '90s!" From Nirvana to Nickelodeon, every new installment will allow one of your favorite players the chance to turn back the clock and share their favorite memories, movies and more from the 1990's.
This week's time traveler: Panthers forward Jamie McGinn (with a cameo from Mark Pysyk)
Q: How old were you when the Panthers first dropped the puck in 1993?
McGNN: I was five.
Q: When you think of the '90s, what are the first things that come to mind?
McGINN: I just think about being a kid and playing minor hockey. Not enjoying school too much and homework and everything [laughs]. It was a lot of car rides and spending time with family.
PYSYK, to McGINN: How about *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys?
McGINN, to PYSYK: Maybe for you… Mark dressed the same as them. He hung their posters on his walls.
Q: Who was your favorite hockey player in the '90s?
McGINN: Gary Roberts. I just enjoyed watching him play. I remember that, injury or not, he was the heart and soul on the team. He always gave a full effort. I just loved the way he competed out there.
Q: What was your favorite band in the '90s?
McGINN: Does Nickelback go back that far? If not, then I'll have to go with Eminem. His early stuff like "My Name Is" was in the late-90s. I still listen to him.
Q: What was your favorite movie in the '90s?
McGINN: Dumb and Dumber is a classic. It's hilarious. I still enjoy watching it to this day. I always liked the limo scene, when he's talking to the girl with the accent and stuff like that.
Q: Who was your celebrity crush in the '90s?
McGINN: I'm going to have to go with Beyoncé.
Q: What trend from the '90s do you wish would make a comeback?
McGINN: I had frosted tips, so I guess they should come back.
Q: What was your favorite TV show in the '90s?
McGINN: Hey Arnold! on Nickelodeon.
Q: What was your first screen name on AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)?
McGINN: I don't remember exactly. It was probably something like Ginner22.
Q: Do you remember when you sent your first e-mail?
McGINN: Hmm… In the 90s? [laughs]
Q: What was your favorite toy to play with in the '90s?
McGINN: I liked to play Pokémon on my Gameboy.
Q: What comes to mind when you think of those early Panthers teams of the '90s?
McGINN: Throwing the rats after every goal and win. It was cool to see the ice littered with rats. It was pretty amazing. Growing up in Canada, the Panthers just seemed so far away. Where we're from, you thought of the beach and just a beautiful place to live when you thought of the Panthers. It was tough to get here, but the day we got to go to Florida it was pretty special.
