News and notes from Oilers practice at Rogers Place on Thursday, where Head Coach Jay Woodcroft turned the page to the second stage of Training Camp.

PRE-GAME REPORT

WINNIPEG, MB -That's it, we're going back to Winnipeg.
The Oilers continue their preseason run with a second game against the Jets, this time at the Canada Life Centre. The two clubs hooked up back on September 25, with the Oilers coming out on top with a 4-0 victory at Rogers Place.
Edmonton was propelled by goals from Markus Niemelainen, James Hamblin, Ryan McLeod, and Dylan Holloway - while the goaltending tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard stopped all 29 shots they faced for the combined shutout.
Local product Tyler Benson skated in that game and will likely have another shot to get on the scoresheet against the Jets on Saturday night as well. The 24-year-old, who has been a fixture for the Bakersfield Condors the last few seasons, has liked the growth in his game coming into this year's training camp.
"I've been happy with our camp, I've felt good on the ice. It's been a good group to be with and compete with," Benson said. "I feel like I've made some big strides throughout the summer and I've played well."

After a prolific junior career with the Vancouver Giants, the Oilers 2016 second-round pick has shown off his offensive flair in the American Hockey League, racking up 151 points in 174 games.
At the pro-level, the 6-foot, 190 pound winger suited up for 29 games last season, but only registered two points in his limited icetime. With the Oilers having not scored a road goal yet this preseason, the team is looking to see if he can translate that American League offensive success at the NHL level.
"I feel like the things that I worked on in the offseason I've been able to apply and it's been showing up in the games, so I'm happy with that so far," Benson said. "I just want to keep continuing to build on my game throughout the camp."

POWER-PLAY POWER UP

One area Head Coach Jay Woodcroft would like to see click a little more is the team's powerplay. So far in the preseason, the Oilers are 0-13 with the man advantage, however there were some very positive signs last night against the Calgary.
"I thought they looked really dangerous. Tip your hat to (Calgary's) goaltender, he made a lot of quality saves tonight," Woodcroft said after the game. "We ask our powerplay to be a momentum generator and that's what it was tonight. We had numerous good looks that didn't go in. We can be sharper maybe around the net on a few of those opportunities, but certainly tip of your cap to their goaltender. He played a heck of a game."
The Oilers fired 10 shots towards Flames goaltender Dan Vladar in the game on only 3 powerplay play opportunities. Edmonton sported the league's third best rate while on the man advantage last season, operating at 26 per cent. With Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the roster who finished 1-2 in the NHL in PP points with 44 and 41 respectively, the Oilers head coach feels it's just a matter of time.
"With respect to the finish, I think we did a lot of the things we wanted to against a good penalty kill, our players zipped it around, it was exactly what we wanted it to be except we didn't get the final result."

FINDING THE JAN-MARK

Mattias Janmark is one of the players looking to solidify his role on the Oilers deep into training camp. Coming off a season where he notched 25 points (9G, 16A) for the Vegas Golden Knights, the versatile winger feels he is finally settling in with his new club.
"I've been jumping around here for a few years, you learn every time in new environments. Just trying to work hard and learn new things," Janmark said. "The two games I've been in haven't been the best, but I think the fundamentals are there. It's getting better and better with the team stuff, hopefully I can make a few more plays and get more comfortable with the puck so for opening night I'm ready to go."

The product of Danderyd, Sweden has five shots on goal and is averaging 16:12 minutes of ice time in his two preseason contests, but the Oilers have been shutout in both games Janmark has played. With the 29-year-old expected to dress against the Jets, the hope is to find the finish that has helped the winger score 66 goals over his six NHL season.
"Preseason games aren't the funnest ones, but they do the work. Every game you feel a bit better, so when you look back at it you'll be happy you played those games," Janmark said. "Coming to a new team and a new system, and getting to know the guys, it's helpful for me and I don't mind playing at all."

Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers are set for a quick turnaround as they head to Winnipeg to play the Jets less than 24 hours after their 2-1 win over the Flames at Rogers Place.
The victory saw pre-season debuts for a number of Oilers stars, including Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Darnell Nurse -- plus the Oilers debut for goaltender Jack Campbell.
The Oilers new starting goaltender had a fairly quiet night, stopping all but one of the eight Flames shots he faced, with only Dillon Dube's finding the twine midway through the first period.
The Oilers opened the scoring at Rogers Place, with perennial Rocket Richard candidate Leon Draisaitl batting a rebound out of the air past Flames starter Dan Vladar. The shorthanded marker was set up by some "dogged" work by Kailer Yamamoto.
"Just a dog on a bone relentless work ethic. It was shorthanded right? He did some good things," Woodcroft said. "It started with a really good clear from Philip Broberg, their goaltender mishandled it and put them in a bad spot. (Yamamoto) flat out, out worked their powerplay. For us to find a goal like that, I would say the thing that most people didn't see is that he took a hit to make that play. We saw the nice finish, but he made a great play while taking a hit for the team."

The game would remain tied until the 11:05 mark in the third period when Luke Esposito found Brett Kulak at the point. The defender promptly fired a slap shot high through a screened Vladar for what would become the game winning goal on the evening.
The win brings the Oilers pre-season record to 2-2-0 thus far, with four more games left before the home opener.
Jets Team Scope
The Jets are coming off a 4-3 come from behind win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
Trailing 3-2 with 3:29 remaining in the game, Winnipeg 2022 first-round pick (30th overall) Brad Lambert capitalized off an Evgenii Dadonov turnover, and fired a low shot past Habs goaltender Cayden Primeau.
Winnipeg would take the lead with 0:18 remaining in the period when veteran defender Nate Schmidt knuckled a slapshot from the point through Primeau to seal the win.
Former Bakersfield Condor Evan Polei and center Cole Maier picked up the other tallies for the Jets. Between the pipes, veteran starter David Rittich turned aside 9 of the 10 shots he faced before being replaced by Arvid Holm. The 23-year-old allowed two goals on 15 third-period shots, picking up the win.
The Jets are currently 2-1-0 in the preseason, picking up wins over the Canadiens and Senators with their sole loss coming at the hands of the Oilers on September 25.
