EDMONTON, AB -It was Team Kurri who outlasted Team Gretzky, Messier, and Lowe to hoist the 2023 Billy Moores Cup.

The tournament was played out in a three-on-three, round-robin format on Tuesday morning

Oilers 2021 sixth-round pick Matvey Petrov led the way for Team Kurri, sniping a variety of beautiful goals including a bar down wrister that brought out some 'oohs and ahhs' from the fans in attendance.

"Yeah, we did pretty good job," Petrov said. "I think we worked hard for that trophy, so I think it's pretty good experience for young guys here. That was pretty good battle today."

The 20-year-old right-shot winger is coming off a second successful season in the Ontario Hockey League with the North Bay Battalion - notching 93 points (27G, 66A) in 65 games - and was highly noticeable throughout the short tournament.

For others, like forward Jayden Grubbe who was recently acquired from the New York Rangers for a fifth-round pick, the Billy Moores cup was a great opportunity to compete and show off the work the prospects have been putting in during the summer to improve.

"Yeah, our team struggled a little bit. We didn't get a win until the last game there, but it's nice to get one," Grubbe, who suited up for team Messier, said. "It's kind of fun just play three-on-three. Everyone's trying as hard as they can, but it's also a little more fun than just doing a normal scrimmage, so I think it's good. Everyone's kind of shown how they can play, but also you're competing and having fun at the same time."

The change to a three-on-three, half-ice format was a popular choice for the Oilers prospects. The tight quarters meant a little less offseason skating and a lot more time with the puck and operating in traffic.

"This time of the year, not everyone's skating a lot. It's the start of the summer. Everyone's coming off the end of the season, so it's kind of nice," Grubbe said. "Just in tight battles, you can still showcase your skill, but it's more goals and a little less skating."
