TRENDING UP
Vancouver Canucks: They have been much more competitive and appear to be turning the corner since the return of right wing Brock Boeser from injury; Vancouver has won back-to-back games after four straight one-goal losses (0-3-1). Boeser has six points (five goals, one assist), including a hat trick against the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, and a high shot volume (24 shots on goal) in his six games back.
Rookie scoring leader Elias Pettersson, now on the cusp of the top 25 forward rankings, has two five-point games and is better than a point per game on the season (30 in 26 games). The Canucks are a reliable source of fantasy power when Pettersson, Boeser and defenseman Alexander Edler are all healthy. Forward Josh Leivo (LW/RW, 7 percent owned) has one goal, eight SOG and is plus-5 in three games on a line with mostly Pettersson and Boeser since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 3.
Steven Stamkos: He may be on a separate line from fellow elite forwards Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point, but Stamkos is suddenly one of the hottest players in the NHL with 16 points in his past 11 games, including seven points (five goals, two assists) over his past two games. He has benefited from the return of wing Ondrej Palat from injury and is producing in droves on the first power play (six power-play points in past seven games).
TRENDING DOWN
Mathew Barzal: At the surface, Barzal is not too far from a point per game in his second NHL season (23 points in 29 games). But his category coverage has been lacking; he's minus-12, has 59 SOG (2.0 per game), doesn't cover hits (seven) and has been held to three goals and 5.1 percent shooting (12.9 as rookie). Barzal's line with wings Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier combined on New York's lone goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday, but Barzal has one PPP in his past 11 games; the Islanders are fourth worst in power-play efficiency at 14.4 percent.
St. Louis Blues:Right wing Vladimir Tarasenko is ranked outside Yahoo's top 100 (108th) based on standard category performance entering Tuesday and has no points and is minus-7 over his past four games. The Blues have lost 10 of their past 14 games, and their buy-low fantasy appeal is dwindling. It's encouraging that left wing Jaden Schwartz is expected to return from injury Tuesday on a line with Brayden Schenn and David Perron; Tarasenko will be reunited with Ryan O'Reilly with Alexander Steen on the opposite wing.
INJURY NOTES
T.J. Oshie, WSH:The Washington Capitals right wing will rejoin the top six and first power play with elite forwards Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov upon his return this week. Oshie, a game-time decision Tuesday, is a fringe top 50 fantasy forward and was on an 82-game pace of 64 points prior to injury (NHL career high: 60 in 2013-14), meaning now is the time to target him in a fantasy trade proposal.
Paul Stastny, VGK:The Vegas Golden Knights would get a big lift if Stastny (C, 20 percent owned) returns against the New York Islanders on Wednesday. Stastny, who hasn't played since Oct. 8 because of a lower-body injury, is expected to be the second-line center with valuable wings Max Pacioretty and Alex Tuch and boost a middle-of-the-road power play (19.4 percent; T-15th in NHL). Stastny had 28 points in 36 games (regular season, Stanley Cup Playoffs combined) on a line with mostly elite wing Patrik Laine for the Winnipeg Jets last season after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues.
