Sept. 28: NHL Preseason Roundup

Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored in his debut for the Carolina Hurricanes, a 3-1 preseason win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina on Tuesday.

Frederik Andersen made 36 saves in his Carolina debut.
Kotkaniemi gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead 9:07 into the first period with a power-play goal. The forward was a restricted free agent who left the Montreal Canadiens on an offer sheet from Carolina.
He had an assist on a power-play goal by Teuvo Teravainen that made it 2-0 at 17:01.
Jack Drury scored for Carolina, which signed Andersen as a free agent this offseason.
Alex Barré-Boulet scored, and Manny Lagace made 29 saves for Tampa Bay. The defending Stanley Cup champions played their preseason opener.
Sabres 5, Blue Jackets 4 (SO): Linus Weissbach scored the tying goal with 54 seconds left in the third period to help the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 shootout win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Tuesday.
Weissbach had two assists for the Sabres, who scored three times in the third period in their preseason opener.
Jack Quinn scored the only goal in the shootout. The 20-year-old forward was the No. 8 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.
Jake Bean had a goal and two assists in his Blue Jackets debut after being acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on July 24. He did not play in the preseason opener Monday, a 3-0 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Michael Mersch and JJ Peterka scored third-period goals for the Sabres. Aaron Dell made 12 saves; he was replaced at 9:56 of the second period by Dustin Tokarski, who made 16 saves.
Oliver Bjorkstrand scored at 5:56 and then on the power play at 9:37 of the first period to give the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead.
Arttu Ruotsalainen scored for the Sabres to make it 2-1 at 11:20 of the first.
Vladislav Gavrikov made it 3-1 27 seconds in the second period. Bean scored at 16:08 to make it 4-1.
Elvis Merzlikins made 14 saves for the Blue Jackets. Jet Greaves made 16 saves in the third period.

Rangers 3, Bruins 2: Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists in his preseason debut to help the New York Rangers defeat the Boston Bruins 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.
Panarin made it 3-2 on a breakaway at 19:00, the last of five goals in the second period.
Anthony Bitetto gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 3:35, their first goal of the preseason. The Rangers lost to the New York Islanders 4-0 on Sunday.
Kaapo Kakko made it 2-0 at 7:22 before Jack Studnicka cut it to 2-1 at 8:46. Urho Vaakanainen tied it 2-2 at 15:29 with a 4-on-4 goal.
Igor Shesterkin made 11 saves on 12 shots in 30:21 for New York, and Tyler Wall saved 15 of 16 shots in relief.
Linus Ullmark, making his Boston debut after signing a four-year contract July 28, allowed two goals on 13 shots playing 30:21. Kyle Keyser allowed one goal on eight shots.

Islanders 3, Flyers 2 (OT): Anthony Beauvillier scored 22 seconds into overtime, giving the New York Islanders a 3-2 preseason win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Beauvillier scored from low in the left face-off circle, finishing a give-and-go with Noah Dobson. He and Dobson each had a goal and two assists.
Maksim Sushko tied it 2-2 for Philadelphia on a wraparound at 14:30 of the third period.
Ryan Ellis assisted on Sushko's goal and played 23:43 with six shots and four blocked shots in his Flyers debut. The defenseman, acquired from the Nashville Predators in a trade July 17, played on the top pair with Ivan Provorov.
Egor Zamula gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 5:14 of the second period with a wrist shot from the left point. Derick Brassard assisted on the goal in his Philadelphia debut in its preseason opener.
Adam Pelech scored for the Islanders, and Cory Schneider saved 10 of 11 shots playing 30:24. Kenneth Appleby made 15 saves in relief.
Carter Hart saved 17 of 18 shots playing the first two periods for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson made nine saves.

Oilers 6, Kraken 0: Connor McDavid was one of five Edmonton Oilers to score in a 6-0 win against the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Tuesday.
Brendan Perlini scored twice, and Darnell Nurse, Jesse Puljujarvi and Zach Hyman scored for Edmonton, which defeated the Calgary Flames 4-0 on Sunday in its preseason opener.
Hyman, in his Oilers debut after signing as a free agent this offseason, gave Edmonton a 3-0 lead 16:08 into the first period. McDavid made it 5-0 at 18:24 of the second period. He also had two assists.
Mike Smith (18 saves) and Mikko Koskinen (16 saves) combined for the shutout. Ilya Konovalov and Stuart Skinner were the goalies Sunday.
Chris Driedger allowed five goals facing 23 shots for Seattle, which won the first game in its history, 5-3 against the Vancouver Canucks, on Sunday in Spokane, Washington. Joey Daccord made nine saves on 10 shots.
The Kraken have four more preseason games and will not play in Seattle until their home opener against the Canucks at Climate Pledge Arena on Oct. 23. They open their regular season at the Vegas Golden Knights on Oct. 12.

Golden Knights 4, Avalanche 3: Jonathan Marchessault scored the go-ahead goal on the power play late in the third period, helping the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 preseason win against the Colorado Avalanche at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Marchessault converted Reilly Smith's backhand feed in front to break a 3-3 tie with 4:10 remaining.
Laurent Brossoit made 18 saves in his debut for the Golden Knights, who were 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Bowen Byram and Jack Johnson each had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who were playing their preseason opener.
Patrick Brown gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead at 2:07 of the first period before Oskar Olausson tied it 1-1 at 10:06 in his NHL debut. The forward was selected in the first round (No. 28) of the 2021 NHL Draft.
Nicolas Hague put Vegas back in front 2-1 at 15:57 with a power-play goal.
Byram tied it 2-2 at 18:56 of the second period with a wrist shot from the left face-off dot with Brossoit screened. Johnson, in camp on a professional tryout contract, gave Colorado a 3-2 lead at 6:18 of the third period.
Alex Pietrangelo tied it 3-3 with a slap shot from the point 1:26 later at 7:44.
Pavel Francouz saved 14 of 16 shots playing 30:03 for the Avalanche. Jonas Johansson allowed two goals on 13 shots in relief.

Kings 4, Sharks 3: The Los Angeles Kings scored two goals in 27 seconds late in the second period in a 4-3 preseason win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center in San Jose on Tuesday.
Kale Clague gave the Kings a 2-1 lead at 19:15, and Austin Wagner made it 3-1 at 19:42.
Lias Andersson increased the lead to 4-1 with a power-play goal 1:59 into the third period before Brent Burns brought the Sharks with 4-2 at 5:47.
Tomas Hertl made it 4-3 at 19:19 off a pass from William Eklund, who had two assists.
Timo Meier put the Sharks ahead 1-0 at 13:39 of the first period. Jordan Spence tied it 1-1 5:40 into the second.
Jonathan Quick made 22 saves on 23 shots playing 31:55 in his preseason debut for Los Angeles. Garret Sparks made 13 saves playing 28:05 in relief.
James Reimer, making his San Jose debut after signing a two-year contract July 28, allowed three goals on 21 shots playing the first two periods. Alexei Melnichuk made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief.
