Dobson was a first-round pick (No. 12) by the Islanders in the 2018 NHL Draft after scoring 69 points (17 goals, 52 assists) in 67 games and winning the Memorial Cup with Acadie-Bathurst of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Islanders signed Dobson to a three-year, entry-level contract Aug. 13, 2018. He was returned to juniors during training camp and was captain for Acadie-Bathurst, where he scored 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 28 games before being traded to Rouyn-Noranda, where he won the Memorial Cup for the second year in a row.

He made his NHL debut against the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 8, 2019 and scored his first goal against the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 14, 2020.
Dobson signed a three-year contract with the Islanders on Aug. 22, 2022.
