11.23.22 Recap

RALEIGH, NC. -The Carolina Hurricanes were shut out by the Arizona Coyotes Wednesday night, 4-0.

Three Things

Going Through It Offensively

For just the second time this season Carolina was held without a goal.
While shot attempts after 20 minutes of play
were 37-4* in favor of the home team
, the Coyotes and their one shot on goal held a 1-0 lead.
It turns out that it was all the offense they would need, with backstop Karel Vejmelka turning aside all 36 shots faced for his team.
The Canes have now scored just 13 goals at five-on-five in their last eight games.

Power Play Woes

In addition to their struggles at even strength, Carolina went 0/4 on the man advantage.
It was the sixth consecutive game that the team was blanked on the power play, stretching their current run to 0-for-20.
The team is now operating at a 13.5% success rate on the season, ranking 31st in the NHL only behind Anaheim's 13.2%.

Koochie's Big Stop

The highlight of the evening for Carolina came by way of a potential save of the year from Pyotr Kochetkov.
On the same day that he
inked a four-year, $8 million contract extension
with the team, the 23-year-old Russian used every inch of his stick to deny Travis Boyd of what looked like a sure-fire goal.
It was one of Kochetkov's 24 stops on the night, coming en route to his first NHL regulation loss.

Bonus Notes

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amourexpressing his frustrations with the power play, post-game...
"That's the difference too. If your power play is going you can weather the storm when you're not scoring at five-on-five. It's been really frustrating. We had an empty net in the first. If we score there, we're not talking about the power play. Then we made some bad decisions in the second and third power play. We're not executing. They just fired their one at the net, got their bounce and that's their power play goal. Sometimes you have to get greasy and ugly goals and we're not getting those."
Jordan Staalgiving his feelings to the media...
"It's frustrating. The puck's not going in. We're finding little ways to beat ourselves. We're making it harder on ourselves than we need to be. I think there's a lot to improve on and a lot to get better at. It's going to have to start soon."
Andrei Svechnikovproviding his thoughts on the game and where the team feels they are at amid their current 0-3-1 stretch...
"I thought we came out ready. We played the first period pretty good. After that we just went down, you know? We've been doing that for a while now. We just have to wake up or something."
