EDMONTON, AB -In a pivotal divisional matchup against the Los Angeles Kings, it looks as if Head Coach Jay Woodcroft will turn to some tried and tested combinations on Thursday night.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, fresh off a five-point night against the Vegas Golden Knights, will take another spin on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman. In addition, Evander Kane and Kailer Yamamoto are expected to anchor the wings next to the NHL's second leading scorer in Leon Draisaitl.
Stuart Skinner occupied the starters crease during morning skate and looks likely to get the nod tonight for the Oilers as he tries to rebound from his last matchup against Los Angeles. The 24-year-old was peppered with power-play goals, allowing three pucks past him on 24 shots back on Jan. 9, all while the Kings had the man advantage.
The biggest question heading into the evening will be whether coach Woodcroft decides to roll with 11 or 12 forwards on the night. Edmonton deployed the trusty 11-and-7 setup in their decisive victory over Vegas on Wednesday, and Woodcroft has a history of repeating what works when the results are favourable. Devin Shore was the odd man out in favour of Philip Broberg last game, but it won't be known if that remains the case until after warm up tonight.
"I think you're seeing people slotted into the proper batting order up front and gives the coaching staff more options," Woodcroft said about his lineup decisions. "It allows for easier accountability when it comes to performance, those types of things."
