PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The early part of the season is the foundation in which a team builds their game for the rest of the year.
The process may not always be smooth, on a night-to-night basis the Oilers are taking on the top professionals in their sport trying to do everything in their power to stunt the team's success. However, the Oilers have been pleased with the early season outcomes ahead of tonight's contest against the Nashville Predators.
"I think where we're at as a team, we realize it's not always going to be smooth sailing, that in fact, through adverse moments, that's what draws the team nearer to each other," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "We have a way we want to play. There are times that the other team does good things too. You got to tip your hat to them. But I think we have a mature group. We're led by a group of leaders that are determined to come out on top every night and if something bad happens, we don't blink, we don't flinch, and we just get on with focusing on the next play. And that's a credit to our leadership group."
The Oilers have fought through periods of adversity to come out of their first nine games with a positive 6-3 record, including a perfect 3-for-3 road trip.
On the othereside, the Predators have not had the start to the season that last year's Central Division wild card team would like. Nashville is currently sporting a 3-5-1 record and are sitting 11th in the Western Conference. The Preds saw a start-stop beginning to their year kicking off the season in Bern, Switzerland against the San Jose Sharks well before the rest of the NHL saw a puck drop, followed by a four-day break that had sputtered any momentum they tried to mustered.
Things will not be getting any easier heading into Rogers Place tonight against the Oilers according to star defender Roman Josi.
"Yeah, it's tough. I mean, obviously everybody knows about those two guys, Draisaitl and Mcdavid, how dangerous they are, but they're a deep team," Josi said about his competition. "They have a lot of other threats too and you have to pay close attention to all them, especially as a defenceman. They play really fast and obviously those two guys are superstars in the league, the best forwards in the world. But yeah, there's a lot of threats over there so we got to be playing well defensively."

HELP IS ON THE WING

Some things are assured in life: Death, Taxes, and Connor and Leon putting up points.
It's what happens around those two that helps dictate if the Oilers offence is going to be simply good, or elite. The respective strong starts of Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the left wing has pushed the Oilers goal scoring capabilities into the stratosphere in the early part of the season.
Hyman enters tonight's contest against the Predators with a four-game goalscoring streak and nine points (6G, 3A) in his last six games. His head coach has a simple way of describing Hyman's style of play.
"You want to know how I would describe Zach Hyman? And it's probably one of the best compliments I could give any type of player, but I would describe Zach Hyman as being easy to play with, but hard to play against," Woodcroft said. "His effect on whatever line he plays on, I think you can see tangible results immediately. He does a lot of things that don't show up on the score sheet, but are valued by his teammates and coaches as well. So that's where I got that from. Easy to play with, hard to play against."
The little things Hyman does are translating onto the scoresheet during his time with the Blue & Orange. Last season the 30-year-old recorded a career-high 54 points (27G, 27A) in his first year in Edmonton and he's already on pace to shatter those numbers this season.
His counterpart in the top-six left wing spot in Nugent-Hopkins has 11 points in his last seven contests. Although Nugent-Hopkins said he worked specifically on his shot during the offseason to fill the net at a greater pace than the 11 in 63 rate he notched last year, his coach credits his willingness to go to tough spots to get on the scoresheet.

PRE-RAW | Zach Hyman 11.1.22

"I think what Ryan is doing is he's going to hard areas in order to have that type offensive success, and it's a credit to him. He's figured that out," Woodcroft said. "He's willing to get his nose dirty. He's willing to go to hard areas. He had numerous good chances from that area in the Calgary game. It didn't go in for him, but that didn't deter him from going to that area. I think it's good advice for any player that hasn't found the offensive success that they want to have. That's where the goals are scored at."
The longest serving Oilers player is relishing the opportunity to play a more offensive role after anchoring the Oilers third line for much of last season.
"I tried to come in this year and just focus on mine and was trying to bear down around the net, shoot the puck a little bit more, shoot with a little more confidence, and so far I've been feeling good," Nugent-Hopkins said. "Obviously, it's nine games in. I've got to keep going and keep having that confidence, but obviously playing with the Hyman right now and Connor, it's a bit more offensive. I mean, obviously Connor drives the place so well that you're going to get a lot offensive looks. I just have to be prepared when I get those chances."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. PREDATORS
STREAM: 7:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet One
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers will try to carry the momentum generated from a clean sweep of their first road trip of the season into a three-game homestand beginning Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators.
Edmonton found different ways to win three games in a row over the St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks and provincial rivals the Calgary Flames to stretch the club's win streak to four games after starting the season 2-3-0.
Last time out in the Battle of Alberta, Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists -- scoring the tying goal before setting up Zach Hyman's game-winner -- and now has four goals and four assists in his last four games while earning himself the NHL's First Star of the Week honours. Goaltender Stuart Skinner was terrific with 40 saves on 42 shots and Zach Hyman continues to operate above a point-per-game pace this season along with Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins after scoring twice against Calgary.

PRE-RAW | Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 11.1.22

With the exception of last Monday's win over Pittsburgh and a couple of empty-net goals, Head Coach Jay Woodcroft sees the Oilers season so far as eight one-goal games out of nine and that there's still plenty to build on in the defensive zone.
"I think we're building consistency in our defensive game," he said. "I still think there's room for growth on our penalty kill. I think there's room for growth in just some small parts of coming into D zone, just things like that we were really hammering home.
Tuesday brings another tough challenge for the Oilers, and Monday's practice was focused on working towards improving in those defensive areas.
"I don't believe that we're hitting on all cylinders yet," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I think there's a lot of room for growth in our game, but what I've really enjoyed is the work ethic of our players; the understanding that it's not all going perfectly right off the bat at the start of the season, yet we're finding ways to put wins on the board."
Predators Team Scope
The Nashville Predators snapped a five-game losing streak last Thursday to claim their 900th win in franchise history, only to be blanked 3-0 by the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.
Juuse Saros did the heavy lifting for the Predators in the loss, making a number of stops on breakaways and 2-on-1's in the first period before ending the night with 32 saves. Nashville's powerplay that was top-10 in 2021-22 went 0-for-5 versus Washington and has struggled out of the gate to begin the new season at 8.3 percent (3-for-36), good enough for only 30th in the League.
Offence has been hard to come by for some of the Nashville stars, including defenceman and 2022 Norris Trophy finalist Roman Josi, who's only been able to provide a goal and three assists with a -7 plus/minus in nine games. Josi has recorded points in just two of his nine games this season after having 11 points (3G, 8A) through his first 10 games last season.
But with talent like Josi, Matt Duchene, Filip Forsberg and Nino Neiderreiter in the fold for Nashville in front of solid goaltending in Saros, it's a challenge Edmonton can't take lightly on Tuesday.

RAW | Leon Draisaitl 10.31.22

"We understand that the opponent that's coming in tomorrow is a really hardworking group," Coach Woodcroft said. "They have a lot of skilled players on that team and they're going to present a stiff challenge for us."
Since starting the season with back-to-back victories over the San Jose Sharks at the NHL Global Series in Prague, Czech Republic, the Predators are 1-5-1 while getting outscored 25-15 and scoring one goal or fewer in four of their last seven contests.
Tuesday's meeting in Edmonton is the first of 14 games during the month of November and the first of five straight on the road through Alberta (Edmonton and Calgary) and the West Coast (Vancouver and Seattle) before finishing off with the reigning Stanley Cup Champions the Colorado Avalanche.
