PRE-GAME REPORT

COLUMBUS, OH - The rubber match of the Oilers three-game road trip goes tonight in Columbus as the team will look to take two of the three matchups on their Eastern Conference swing.
The trip opened on a triumphant note Saturday night in Montreal as the Oilers got their offence going in a dominant 6-2 decision over the Canadiens, led by a two-goal effort from Jujhar Khaira.
Edmonton emulated that energy and offensive push Sunday night in Toronto but did not get rewarded with goals in the same fashion. Curtis McElhinney stopped all 41 shots he faced as the Leafs captured a 1-0 shutout win.
At 12-16-2 and eight points out of a Western Conference playoff spot, the Oilers want nothing more than to emerge from this tough road trip with four of a possible six points.
"We have to win games, it's as simple as that," said Head Coach Todd McLellan. "The lines we've put together have had some good games lately. We're looking for that repetition night after night of showing up and getting things done."
POWER PLAY PROGRESSION
The Oilers currently have the 22nd-ranked power play in the NHL; however, they're tied for 13th during the month of December and showed flashes of PP brilliance over the weekend.
Milan Lucic and Oscar Klefbom found the back of the net on the man advantage against Montreal as the team converted two of their four opportunities on the night.
The Oilers also had four chances in Toronto, and though they were stymied by McElhinney, they like where they're at right now in terms of generating quality scoring chances.
"Guys are moving and getting lots of shots through," said Mark Letestu, who's tied for the team lead in PPGs with three and ranks second in PP points with six. "Dangerous. Dangerous, at all times. We ran into a hot goalie, but I think the structure and some of the things we preach showed up, and that had been missing recently. If the last two games, the way the power play has been going, is any indication of where we're headed, we're going to be just fine."
"The last couple of games we've been shooting a lot," added Klefbom, who has a goal and two helpers on the PP this season. "Last game was tough, we didn't have the bounces. It felt like we could have shot 80 shots on goal and they wouldn't have gone in anyways… We have a good feeling in the group and we have to keep the momentum going."
"I thought it was dangerous in Toronto and good in Montreal, so there's some positive signs there," added Coach McLellan. "We've moved pucks quicker, we've created better opportunities and chances than we have in previous games."
PP conversions will not come easy against the Blue Jackets, though, as they've only surrendered 11 on the season, which is the least in the entire League. Columbus is tied for third in the NHL with a 85.7% penalty kill success rate.
LINEUP NOTES
After skating on his own for a few days, Cam Talbot joined his teammates for Oilers morning skate in Columbus.
Coach McLellan said the team's top netminder "is feeling better" but is still subject to a recovery timeline with his upper-body injury and is not quite ready for game action.
Thus, Laurent Brossoit will make his sixth consecutive start between the pipes. He's had a pretty strong road trip, stopping 44 of the 47 shots he's faced, giving his team a chance against both Montreal and Toronto.
The lone change to Edmonton's crew will be among the forward group as Anton Slepyshev will replace Drake Caggiula.
Here's the full projected lineup:
Lucic-McDavid-Puljujärvi
Maroon-RNH-Cammalleri
Khaira-Draisaitl-Strome
Slepyshev-Letestu-Kassian
Nurse-Russell
Klefbom-Benning
Auvitu-Davidson
Brossoit
Ellis

PREVIEW

OILERS (12-16-2) at BLUE JACKETS (19-10-1)
TV: 5:00 p.m. MST; Televised on Sportsnet Oilers
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the first of two meetings between the two teams this season. Their second and final game against each other will be March 27 at Rogers Place.
Last season, the Oilers dropped both games by a 3-1 score. The last meeting between these teams was on January 3, 2017 in Columbus.
Oilers team scope:
The Oilers are wrapping up a three-game road swing tonight looking to come out with a winning trip after winning Saturday in Montreal and losing Sunday in Toronto.
In all, the Oilers have won six of their last nine games. They are eight points behind the Calgary Flames for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The club is also seven points behind their pace from last season after 30 games.
Blue Jackets team scope:
Columbus is in first place in the Metropolitan Division with 39 points, two points ahead of second-place NY Islanders and Washington but the division is extremely tight with only four points separating first-place Columbus and sixth-place Pittsburgh, who are currently a hair below the playoff cut line.
Off-season acquisition Artemi Panarin leads the team in scoring with 26 points (7 goals, 19 assists) while the team's leading goal scorer is Josh Anderson who has 11 goals through 28 games played. Anderson's career high in goals is 17, achieved last season through 78 games.
Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has a 2.05 goals-against average and .930 save percentage to go along with a 16-7-1 record.
By the Numbers:
Milan Lucic leads all Oilers in the month of December with five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Jujhar Khaira has the most goals this month for Edmonton with three in four games. Jesse Puljujarvi has two goals and three points in four games this month.
There's a very good chance that tonight's game will be decided at even strength. Columbus is the best penalty killing team in the NHL on home ice, having only allowed two goals all season long. By contrast, the Oilers have allowed 17 power play goals at home. Columbus also has the worst power play in the NHL, ranked 31st at a measly 9.4% having only scored eight power play goals all season long through 30 games.
Columbus is one of only five teams in the NHL which have averaged more shots on goal per game than the Oilers. Edmonton has peppered opposing goaltenders with an average of 34.4 shots per game while Columbus has fired 34.8 at the opposition. The two teams rank sixth and fifth respectively.
Panarin has four goals and seven points in six career games against the Oilers. Matt Calvert has seven points (four goals) in 10 career games played.
Injury Report:
OILERS - Andrej Sekera (knee) is out; Cam Talbot (upper body) is doubtful; Adam Larsson (upper body) is doubtful
