GLENDALE, AZ - Despite goal scoring trending up this season, the imperative in getting the first goal in a game has never been more important.
The Oilers are 14-4-2 in 2017-18 when notching the opening goal. When their opposition does so, the club is 9-25-2.
"It's been a weird year. In the majority of the games, we've been giving up the first goal," said Oilers forward Drake Caggiula. "Quite often, we've been giving them up early in the first period."
The Oilers own a minus-17 goal differential in the first period. In the second and third, they have a minus-eight goal differential.
"We've got to find a way to get the first one, and even if we don't get the first one, just make sure we're creating positive momentum early on," continued Caggiula. "That way, we can build for the rest of the game."
