Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner, is recovering from June 14 foot surgery. He and defenseman Johnny Oduya, who will miss his second game with a lower-body injury, are skating in Ottawa and could rejoin the Senators on a three-game road trip that continues against the Calgary Flames on Friday and Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.
Defenseman Thomas Chabot will make his season debut on defense and goaltender Craig Anderson will make his third straight start for Ottawa, which lost its first two games in a shootout.
Goaltender Jacob Markstrom gets a second straight start after making 33 saves in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, his first start in a season opener for the Canucks.

Center Derick Brassard leads the Senators with three points (one goal and two assists) in two games.
Center Bo Horvat scored twice against the Oilers after leading the Canucks with 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) last season.

Status report

Hoffman was back on the ice Tuesday after missing practice Monday with illness, but will be a game-time decision. Coach Guy Boucher said he is still contemplating dressing seven defensemen and 11 forwards, with Brown coming out and Saros going in on defense. … Boeser, who led the Canucks with seven points (four goals, three assists) during the preseason, will be a healthy scratch for the second straight game.
