The 27-year-old defenseman has missed four games with a lower-body injury sustained against the Dallas Stars on Nov. 24. He leads Avalanche defensemen with 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) in 23 games.
The Avalanche are 9-0-2 in their past 11 games, including a 6-3 win against Pittsburgh on Nov. 28. They have not lost in regulation since Nov. 9 (5-2 at the Winnipeg Jets).
The Penguins have lost their past two games after winning three of four (3-0-1). They are 3-5-2 in their past 10 games.
Colorado defenseman Ian Cole will return to Pittsburgh for the first time since being traded by the Penguins to the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 23 and then to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 26 before signing with Colorado on July 1.
