A big (6-foot-2, 194 pounds), strong, two-way center, Kamenev was chosen by the Nashville Predators in the second round (No. 42) of the 2014 NHL Draft. He came to Colorado as part of a three-team trade between the Predators, Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators on Nov. 5, 2017.
Kamenev was assigned to San Antonio of the American Hockey League before making his Avalanche debut Nov. 16, 2017. During the game, Kamenev broke his forearm after a check from Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik and did not return until March 18, 2018. He ended up going scoreless in three games for Colorado that season.

Kamenev got his first NHL point with an assist at the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 27, 2018, then scored his first NHL goal in his next game five days later at the Calgary Flames.
