The Carolina Hurricanes did not skate Thursday after blowing a 5-3 lead in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday. Despite late breakdowns in front of the net, the Hurricanes were encouraged by scoring five goals, which matched their season high. "I thought we retrieved pucks on the power play, did a good job in that regard," coach Bill Peters said. "We will look at it again. I was happy offensively, but we have to do a better job away from the puck." Peters said that although a back-to-back set is tough, the quick bus ride provides some relief. "It's outstanding," Peters said. "A short little bus ride and you play."

Kings team scope

Goalie Jeff Zatkoff is expected to make his first start for the Los Angeles Kings since Nov. 11. He has yet to play 60 minutes in a game this season. The Kings had a three-day break in their schedule and took the time to work on systems. Their transition game was a particular point of emphasis. "We got in the gym, got strength back up to where it needed to be," defenseman Drew Doughty said. "We worked on the power play a little bit. There wasn't one certain thing, except maybe transition a little bit and how we can be quicker than that, and how we can keep teams on their heels." Coach Darryl Sutter said Carolina is structured much like Los Angeles with defensemen who take a high percentage of the team's shots. He was particularly impressed with defensemen Justin Faulk and Brett Pesce and how often they shoot. "Watching last night, I saw how dynamic their defense is," Sutter said. "Faulk had 10-11 shot attempts, Pesce had a lot of shot attempts, and they have speed. It's significant, it's the reason their team gets some jump. There's a lot of things they have going for them when you look in terms of possession and checking."

Status report

Leighton is expected to start for Carolina after Ward played in Anaheim. … Andreoff was activated from injured reserve Sunday but likely will be a healthy scratch. "He'll be ready when we need him," Sutter said. "I'm not putting guys in for no reason. Devin [Setoguchi] and Andy are different type players, one is a left winger and one is a right winger. I don't see the need to take a left winger out or take a right winger out." Setoguchi also was an extra at the morning skate.
