After a standout college career at Miami University, where he was named CCHA rookie of the year in 2005-06 after going 14-5-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and three shutouts, it took Zatkoff quite a while to make his NHL debut.
Zatkoff was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the third round (No. 74) of the 2006 NHL Draft, but didn't make his first NHL start until the 2013-14 season. Zatkoff spent one season with the Ontario in the ECHL before playing four seasons with the Kings' American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, increasing his wins total in each season. He was 21-17-1 with a 2.49 GAA, .920 save percentage and three shutouts in 2011-12 season.

Zatkoff signed a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1, 2012, and posted impressive numbers in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (26 wins, 1.93 GAA, .920 save percentage five shutouts) in 2012-13 before making his NHL debut the following season. Zatkoff made 24 saves in a 6-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Oct. 11, 2013, in his debut and earned his first NHL win on Nov. 2, a 3-0 shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Zatkoff made his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut April 13, 2016, when starter Marc-Andre Fleury was out with a concussion. He made 35 saves, helping the Penguins to a 5-2 win against the New York Rangers -- Pittsburgh's first victory on the way to winning the Stanley Cup.
A free agent after the season, Zatkoff signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Kings to back up Jonathan Quick but struggled and was assigned to the AHL. The Kings traded Zatkoff to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 22, 2018, for future considerations, and was assigned to Cleveland of the AHL.
