Hamilton scores two goals in Flames win against Canucks

VANCOUVER -- The Calgary Flames came into Vancouver pledging to stay out of the penalty box after taking seven penalties in a lopsided loss on Friday. They didn't, and it didn't matter.
Calgary killed off five first-period power plays and didn't give up a shot during a 5-on-3 for 1:11 before Mark Giordano scored shorthanded, setting the tone for a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Saturday.

"It gives us a lot of momentum, and then looking at their team, it probably frustrates their top guys," said Giordano, who scored the 100th goal of his NHL career. "I know when we're on the power play and we don't generate anything it's frustrating. We definitely got momentum."
Defenseman Dougie Hamliton had two goals, and Travis Hamonic and Johnny Gaudreau also scored for the Flames (4-2-0), who bounced back from a 6-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators that included giving up two power-play goals on seven chances.

Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan, who talked in the morning about the need for better discipline, said he was surprised the Flames got away with another parade to the penalty box.
"Our penalty kill was very good," Gulutzan said. "Our captain (Giordano) was a monster out there. Just looking at his will today, he pushed us though. Our penalty killers did a good job, but yeah, we got lucky. We're dodging bullets."
Jaromir Jagr had an assist, his first point since signing Oct. 4, and Mike Smith made 27 saves after being pulled with 12:02 left against Ottawa after giving up five goals on 22 shots.

"Anytime you don't play well you want to get back in there as soon as possible," Smith said.
Derek Dorsett and Brock Boeser scored and Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves for the Canucks (1-2-1), who have lost three straight.
Vancouver finished 0-for-7 with three shots on the power play.
"You're not going to win a lot of games if that happens," Daniel Sedin said of the early power-play struggles. "You have to capitalize."
Dorsett tied it 1-1 with 2:15 left in the first period, but Hamonic scored his first goal with the Flames 10:57 into the second to make it 2-1, and Hamilton scored his first at 17:59 for a 3-1 lead.

Gaudreau made it 4-1 on a power play 10:14 into the third period, taking a pass off the rush from Jagr and scoring with a shot that deflected off defenseman Michael Del Zotto and caught Markstrom moving the wrong way. It was Jagr's 1,150th NHL assist and 1,915th career NHL point.
Boeser scored his first of the season nine seconds later on a partial breakaway to make it 4-2, but Hamilton scored again at 11:11 on a point shot through a screen and under Markstrom's arm for a 5-2 Calgary lead.

Goal of the game

Giordano finished off the 3-on-1 shorthanded rush by kicking a pass into his skates up to his stick and beating Markstrom on the glove side from the right face-off dot at 11:37 of the first period.

Save of the game

Boeser got a good wrist shot off from the left hash mark with 2:16 left in the second period that caught Smith moving the wrong way, but the Flames goalie reached back with his glove to catch the puck.

Highlight of the game

All five Canucks were battling for a loose puck left of the net, leaving Hamonic alone when it bounced to the right face-off dot for a shot past Markstrom.

Flames forwards Micheal Ferland and Matt Stajan were late scratches. Ferland is day to day with a lower-body injury and Stajan was a healthy scratch. … Vancouver right wing Loui Eriksson left with a right knee injury after being knocked into the Flames net 2:57 into the first period. … Defenseman Derrick Pouliot, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Andrey Pedan and a fourth-round draft pick in 2018 on Oct. 3, made his Canucks debut in place of Alexander Edler, who is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL. Pouliot had an assist in 17:42.
