Ducks hold off Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jakob Silfverberg had two goals and two assists to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Thursday.
Jonathan Bernier stopped 27 shots for the Ducks (7-5-3), who have points in four straight games (3-0-1). Ryan Kesler had two goals and Andrew Cogliano had two assists, totaling eight points for Anaheim's checking line.
"We use that line quite a bit - Silfverberg, Kesler and Cogliano," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "They're depended on to not only check but to provide offense. We think they're one of the top checking lines in the League, but they still can make a contribution on offensive side of it."

The Hurricanes (3-6-4) have lost three in a row.
Kesler gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead at 4:46 of the second period with his fifth goal of the season. From behind the net, Cogliano put a perfect backhand pass on Kesler's stick in the slot for a quick goal.
The Ducks made it 2-0 at 9:30 after a strong shift in the offensive zone. After Cam Fowler shot wide, Silfverberg was alone in front to jump on the rebound and finish on the forehand.

Silfverberg scored again at 12:36 to make it 3-0 after Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce fumbled the puck inside the offensive blue line. Silfverberg got ahead of Pesce after the turnover and beat Cam Ward to the far post.
"By the end of the shift, I was pretty tired," Silfverberg said. "We were kind of neck-and-neck, and I tried to shield the puck. As I got closer to the net, I tried to shoot it, and it managed to sneak in on the far side. Obviously a good goal for me. I'll take it."
Teuvo Teravainen stopped Anaheim's momentum with his third goal of the season at 14:58. After winning a faceoff, he went to the slot, where he redirected Jaccob Slavin's point shot to cut the Ducks lead to 3-1.
Victor Rask scored his fifth of the season at 3:15 of the third period to pull the Hurricanes within 3-2. After a hard-working forecheck by Lee Stempniak to keep the puck below the goal line, Jeff Skinner spun and found Rask, who finished from the left side of the net.
Bernier made several big saves down the stretch, including one on a backhand by Phil DiGiuseppe with 6:26 left in the game.
Kesler scored an empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining.

Goal of the game

Silfverberg's second goal was impressive not only for jumping on the turnover, but for the finish. Pesce managed to knock him off his feet as he got the shot off from the right circle, but Silfverberg slipped the puck past the far post.

Save of the Game

With 1:00 remaining in the second period, Jordan Staal had a wraparound chance with Bernier covering the left post. But the Anaheim goaltender dove across the crease, leading with his glove to block the stuff attempt.

Unsung moment of the Game

The penalty kill came up big when Bernier was called for high-sticking with 6:21 remaining in the game. Cogliano had a big clear, and the Ducks limited the Hurricanes to one shot.

Highlight of the Game

The Hurricanes had several chances to tie the game late, but none better than Rask's bid from the slot with 12:20 remaining. Bernier flashed the right pad to stop a shot headed for just inside the left post.
