WINNIPEG -Funny how things work out in sports.
In 2011, the Jets in their return to Winnipeg selected Mark Scheifele from the OHL's Barrie Colts who was coached by Dale Hawerchuk.
Nine years later, celebrating their 10th season in the Manitoba capital, the Jets had Hawerchuk's wife Crystal announce with the 10th overall pick another OHL product, Cole Perfetti of the Saginaw Spirit.

"Obviously it's been emotional that story. Obviously Dale's was an amazing hockey player. A great player off the ice. He left a legacy and a lasting impression on everyone in Canada, especially in Winnipeg," said Perfetti.
"To be called by Crystal was, it was a pretty cool moment. To be the tenth pick when he wore number ten, that was pretty cool."
Scheifele is well known as a 'hockey nerd' and Perfetti in his pre-draft zoom availability last month mentioned that he too is a student of the game. The newest Jet is looking forward to coming to Winnipeg and working with the team's star centreman.
"What he does on the ice is awesome. He's a great player and seems like a great player off the ice. I already got a text from him welcoming me to the organization," said Perfetti.
"It's great to see guys like that welcome you. To be able to come into an organization and to be able to play with guys like his calibre is special. He's a great player. The way he thinks the game, the way he plays, he's a real true pro. I've been a big fan of his for years now, admired his game. It's going to be surreal to hopefully suit up with him."
Perfetti sat as high as four on some NHL draft analyst's boards and was labeled as the most elite passer of the prospects available. Perfetti is ready to show what he's made of when the chance presents itself.
"First and foremost, you're going to get a kid that's pretty eager and hungry to make the jump," said Perfetti.
"I'm going to come in with a chip on my shoulder and just try and make an impact as soon as I can. You're going to get a 200 foot player but definitely a guy who uses his brain and hockey IQ in the offensive zone and has that ability to score from my shot in tight."
During his major junior career, the 18-year-old has played both wing and centre with the Spirit. Perfetti does have a preference.
"I think I'm a better centreman and can make more of an impact there," said Perfetti.
"But at the end of the day I've played wing and centre my entire life so whatever the coach wants and be excited to do so. Come in and be happy and hungry for sure."
The virtual draft took away the moment of hearing Perfetti having his name being called, walking to the stage, shaking hands with the likes of Gary Bettman, Kevin Cheveldayoff and Paul Maurice, putting on the Jets jersey and getting photos taken on the stage at the Bell Centre in Montreal. But the fact that he got to have his moment with his family and friends made it pretty special.
"To hear them cheer when I was picked, the place was kind of shaking it was so loud. It was amazing and it really felt good to know how much support I really have," said Perfetti.
"It's unbelievable knowing these people care for me and care for my career so much. I can't thank them all enough for being here and everything they've done for career so far. Even though it wasn't a traditional draft, it's something I'll never forget."
