BOSTON - When Ryan Donato arrived in Boston to begin his NHL career last spring, he was hoping that he'd be able to don his favorite number.
Throughout his hockey career, the Scituate native wore 16 - a number that he became quite familiar with throughout his childhood thanks to his father and former Bruins forward Ted Donato.

"My dad's favorite player was Nifty," Donato said of Bruins legend Rick Middleton, who will have his No. 16 raised to the rafters before Thursday night's game with the Islanders. "I always wore 16."
Middleton's impending number retirement left 16 unavailable when Donato joined the Black & Gold, so he opted to just move up a spot to No. 17.
"At the beginning it was a little tough to not wear my number, but obviously it's for a good reason," said Donato. "When I was down in Prov, I actually went home for a couple days and a couple times my dad would show me his highlights on YouTube as his favorite player. I think he'll be pretty excited that I'm here."

Donato recalled after stint in Providence

It is certainly good timing for Donato, who is back with the big club after a tour with Providence over the last month. The 22-year-old began the year with Boston, notching one goal in 11 games, before heading down I-95 in early November.
Donato, recalled by the Bruins on Wednesday, took advantage of his time with Providence, rounding out his 200-foot game, while picking up five goals and four assists in 10 games. On Tuesday night against the Islanders, he'll ride on the left wing alongside Joakim Nordstrom and Noel Acciari on Boston's third line.
"Very excited, said Donato, who will also slide in on the Bruins' second power-play unit. "It's been a little while. Hopefully I'll get some opportunities and hopefully I'll do well with them."
Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy is not ruling out a promotion for Donato at some point, but would like to see how he has grown over the last few weeks before rushing him into a top-six role.
"The third line's a little bit different personality," said Cassidy. "Got Nordy back in the middle, Donato's more of a scorer, Acciari more energy, physical. We'll see how it plays out. It kind of shook out that way. We didn't want to mess too much with the fourth line.
"He'll get some power-play time. Let's see how he plays first before we adjust our lines. That's kind of our thinking."
Donato essentially takes the place of Anders Bjork, who was assigned to Providence on Thursday afternoon. Bjork has one goal and two assists in 20 games this season.

Look back at past number retirement ceremonies

Carlo Close

Brandon Carlo, out for the last eight games with an upper-body injury, will not play on Thursday night, but could be back in the lineup on Saturday against the Red Wings.
"He's close. He'll get another good practice in tomorrow, take some contact and hopefully Saturday's the day," said Cassidy

McAvoy Skates

Charlie McAvoy joined the group for morning skate, donning a red non-contact jersey. It's the latest step in his recovery from a concussion, which has kept the blue liner out since Oct. 18.
"He's progressing," said Cassidy. "He's out with [skating and skills coach Kim Brandvold] a little bit early doing some work and then graduated to our practice. Hopefully he's back with us tomorrow.
"It's a day-by-day process for him. He's doing better. We obviously miss him. Will be nice to get him back when that day comes."

A Nifty Night

Middleton will join his fellow Bruins legends in the TD Garden rafters on Thursday night when his No. 16 is hoisted during a pregame ceremony (6:30 p.m. start). For Cassidy, who grew up an avid B's fan, it is sure to be a special evening.
"I loved watching Nifty play, so hopefully they have a good highlight reel out there, too," said Cassidy. "I think it's a great honor for him, well deserved. I'm looking forward to the ceremony.
"It's great for me being an old fan. Listen, I'm gonna take it all in, probably more than the younger guys. I grew up a Bruins fan and appreciate it. Once it's puck drop time, it's time to go to work.
"But you don't get to see these every day. I'm looking forward to it."
