The 6-foot-1 center, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, moved to North America to play with Omaha of the United States Hockey League for the 2013-14 season. The following season, Forsbacka Karlsson led the Lancers with 53 points (15 goals, 38 assists) in 50 games and was named his team's MVP at the 2014 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game.

Forsbacka Karlsson went on to play two seasons at Boston University. After helping the Terriers reach the West Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament, Forsbacka-Karlsson signed a three-year contract with the Bruins. He had 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) during his first season with Providence of the American Hockey League in 2017-18.
Internationally, Forsbacka Karlsson won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. He also competed at the 2013 and 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.
