Since the summer of 2009, the Boston Bruins have been partnering with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) and the Massachusetts Library System (MLS) to present When You Read, You Score! This summer reading program encourages children and teens to read over the summer months so they may avoid the "summer slide" and maintain skills they've learned over the previous academic year.
Children and teens who participate in summer reading programs show an increase in vocabulary scores on standardized testing and an increase in comprehension scores. In fact, reading just four books over the summer can prevent summer learning loss.

Despite most library doors being closed to the public last summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 435,000 Massachusetts residents participated in summer reading programming across the state. For the first annual First Lady of the Commonwealth and Blades Summer Reading Challenge, participants read over 11,000 books and over 1.7 million minutes.
