The Essentials
The Opponent

For the second time in less than a week, the Edmonton Oilers will play the Wild on the second half of a back-to-back set. Last Sunday in Edmonton, the Oilers were coming off an overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks. This time, Edmonton fell on the losing end of 6-5 contest against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday in Philly. Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson got the start in that one and allowed all six goals, meaning Cam Talbot should get the nod tonight. The main challenge facing the Wild will be in keeping the NHL's leading scorer Connor McDavid off the scoresheet. Minnesota blanked him in a 2-1 overtime win at Rogers Place earlier this week, one of just two times in the past 11 games McDavid has been held without a point.
"A lot of praying," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau quipped when asked how his club was able to keep McDavid scoreless on Sunday. "You watch every game, he's going to get his chances. He had four or five really great chances against us and he just didn't connect on them. His speed is going to allow him opportunities to score against every team, every night. We were the fortunate ones."

Connections

• Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk was the 14th overall selection by the Oilers in the 2004 NHL Draft and was 61-76-21 in 171 career games with Edmonton between 2009-14.
• Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon is from Edmonton.
• Oilers forward Tyler Pitlick went to Centennial High School in Circle Pines and played one year at Minnesota State.
• Oilers forward Benoit Pouliot was selected fourth by the Wild in the 2005 NHL Draft and played in 65 games with Minnesota between 2006-09.
• Oilers forward Matt Hendricks is from Blaine and played college hockey at St. Cloud State.

Home Sweet Home

The Wild returns to Xcel Energy Center for the first time in 14 days. Minnesota has posted two straight wins and a 7-3-0 record on home ice this season, outscoring opponents 30-17.

At the Rink

It's possible the Wild could get a big piece of its blueline back on Friday when Minnesota hosts the Edmonton Oilers at Xcel Energy Center.
Defenseman Christian Folin practiced with the team during morning skate and was cleared to play after sustaining a sprained knee two weeks ago in Minnesota's last game in St. Paul.
"I feel ready in my head. I've been watching a lot of game. My head is definitely in it," Folin said. "[Boudreau] asked me if I was ready and I said of course I'm ready. I'm excited to get back out there. The guys have been playing well. I'll wait to see what happens."

Folin was one of the Wild's steadiest defensemen through the first part of the season and had formed a solid tandem with fellow Swede Jonas Brodin on the back end. After being scratched in the season opener, Folin played in the next 19 games, chipping in with two assists. His plus-8 was among the best on the team at the time of the injury and his size has offered the Wild a big, physical presence on the back end.
"We don't have a big defense and when he's gone, it makes it smaller," Boudreau said. "And he was playing really well with Brodin. It's always a big loss, but I think [Nate Prosser] has stepped in and done a really good job."
With Folin out, Prosser has picked up his game. He was on the ice in the final minute as Minnesota closed out its four-game Canadian road trip with a 3-2 win in Toronto on Wednesday.
If Folin is able to return, Minnesota would have a deep core of defensemen, something that has been a rarity this season. Folin, Jared Spurgeon and Marco Scandella have all missed time with injuries, although luckily for the Wild, not all at the same time.
