Gabriel, a forward born in Newmarket, Ontario, was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the third round (No. 81) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
Gabriel played four seasons (2010-14) for Owen Sound in the Ontario Hockey League after making the team as a walk-on. Following his first season in the OHL, Gabriel was not chosen at the 2011 NHL Draft but attended the Phoenix Coyotes rookie camp as a free agent invitee.

Gabriel signed a three-year contract with the Wild on March 3, 2014, and spent most of the next four seasons with Iowa of the American Hockey League. He was scoreless during a three-game stint with the Wild in 2015-16 and had one assist in 13 games during the 2016-17 season.
