After being able to enjoy the rainy San Jose weather the past two days, the Sharks are back in action at home tonight facing the Columbus Blue Jackets.
It's been just over a month since these two teams last met on February 2, a 3-1 Sharks victory that saw Logan Couture, Kevin Labanc, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic all score.
Coincidentally enough, those three also scored in the Sharks previous game, a resounding 7-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks that saw Joe Pavelski get two goals and Dylan DeMelo record three assists. It's a continuation of the team's strong play post-trade deadline that has seen newly acquired forward Evander Kane fit near-seamlessly with new linemates Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi.
Special teams look to play a factor tonight. The Sharks hold the best penalty kill in the league at 84.5% (87.4% at home), and despite the recent power play drought it's still at 7th in the NHL. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets are the mirror image. They have a 14.8% power play (30th in the NHL - 12.1% on the road) and a 76.5% penalty kill (69.9% on the road). While the 5-on-5 scoring has been welcome, the Sharks do need to get the offensive side of their special teams back on track, and tonight is a prime opportunity to do so.
There's no morning skate today with the early 6PM start (don't show up or turn on your TV at 7:30PM), so lineup and starting goalie likely won't come until 4PM when Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer speaks the media pregame.
